Why are my characters always being crushed?

I'm trying to advance in the AI battles so I can gain access to more battles and thus character shards, but my team is often slaughtered by the AI. And the confusing part? I send in my highest leveled characters, which range from the low 50's in level to 60 for my strongest unit, up against level 39 AI. My team is heavily damaged during the AI's first turn and my attacks barely do anything despite the level difference.
What might I be doing wrong?

If you can't beat a higher node, it's probably better to farm lower nodes to increase the gear levels of your characters.
I didn't think the makeup of the squad was important. After all, it's the AI dishing out massive damage and hardly getting a cut from my units that's the problem. I doubt squad comp will do anything to change that.
I've tried doing mod battles and my units are absolutely butchered. They hardly last more than one turn.

I doubt synergies will keep the AI from being able to take out over half of a unit's health that is at least ten levels higher.
And my team changes depending on what I feel like using.

I don't have Palpatine. That would require Rebel units strong enough to do the Demise event
You have some good rebels, bit not a good leader for them, maybe Ackbar helps you, he's easy to farm and a decent leader.
Do you have good allies??? (For example level 85 gear 10/11 characters) If not, I can help you, if you have good allies, PvE battles became a lot easier

How do I get Ackbar? His shards aren't in any battles I can do thus far.
The highest level ally I have is a level 70 something Tarkin. Other than that I'll sometimes see Phasma, Vader, Old Daka and other allies with weak or no bonuses.

I really don't care. SOmeone who can hit the enemy fast and deadly I suppose? They can't fight you if they're dead after all.

I'd say I'm new to this game but I've been playing for a while now. But there's still a lot I do not understand ((the tutorials suck if you aks me))
If you're unable to complete basic Health Mod Battles and Challenges, then I suggest that you not worry about "... getting crushed" and continue developing a light side team and a dark side team until you can complete Health mod challenges.
This will mean you probably need to be focusing on Scoundrels, as if you really want to crush back, you'll need to do well in the Credit Heists. Seriously... Get working on 5 Scoundrels.

Light side: Lando, decent rebel leader, LOTS of damage
Dark side: Thrawn, my fastest character, good damage, awesome character
Mod battles: Shoretrooper, he taunts at the start of the battle, so the enemy won't attack your characters

Is there a fast way to do so? They require loads of shards and with Han I can only get him through the stores...getting his shards via squad arena will take eternity as I only get 400 arena tokens per day. 200 from the daily challenges and 200 from my rank in the arena.
Also may I aks why them specifically? I'm not objecting to your statement, just wondering why those two specifically, you know?
In Cantina, I'd suggest you farm and develop Lando Calrissian, he's a Scoundrel that will help you big time. When unlocked, focus on Wedge for a time.
On Arena shop, focus on Stormtrooper Han ; he's a Scoundrel too, and a good character throughout the game.
Start gearing up those characters that you already have at a high level, but some of the characters you've left out are better, so longer term you'll have to work on them (Biggs, Leia, Vader, Fives, Tarkin, TFP, mostly).
EDIT : and avoid posting several times in row. You may quote several posts in one answer, or edit an answer if you have something else to add. ;-)
In 10 days you will unlock Han then, not that bad

Why Lando and Stormtrooper Han, specifically?
I try to gear them up but it's frustrating because I can only find gear from a few specific battles, I do those battles and usually I receive no gear, the wrong gear or not enough gear to craft what I need for the character, if that makes sense. And it eats up all my energy.
