CG: Why not clone the HODA nexus event??
I sure you have already thought about this but, I think this event would be pretty good if you cloned it and replace the heroes with shards. For those who aren't familiar with this type of event here is a description.
The nexus event has 5 stages, each stage rewards gold, Xp, and different rarity heroes. You can use any heroes but, some heroes get a bonus for that event. The difficulty ranges from medium to ludicrous and reward better heroes based on difficulty. Once you've completed all stages you win all heores collected during the event. If you don't complete the event you forfeit any heroes rewards but keep gold and XP. You always have the option to continue for gems or a refresh potion which you can win in other events.

Some of those nexus events were very hard for the ftp. But it was a good way for all players to build deeper rosters.
