I don't remember exactly how much time the CLS meta is going on, but it's time for a refresh in arena. It's not that I'm complaining, getting #1 rank without a refresh even is cool and all, but let's all admit it - arena is boring. There are 2 bases of a team : CLS (L)+R2+GK basis, or GK+Zarris basis. And if you don't have one of this Cores in your team, it's very hard to get #1. It shouldn't be that way. Arena has lost it's competitive side, and I really doubt the NS will make the change.

So with the arena full of LS characters, there's only one solution - the guy with the plan, who have forseen it all. The Emperor of the freaking galaxy, Palpatine.
He's the one to bring balance to the force (not Vader, get over it) and it's time the game will make him someone to fear from.
So, in the hopes of devs reading this, let's talk about it.
The reason why palpatine isn't meta, is because there's no reliable tactic for him. (This is why it's on arena tactics) The weaknesses are those : squishy, slow, effect triggers.
1) squishy. Literal. He's not tanky enough to survive on his own and need defense around him. Acceptable if this is the only problem, and g12 comes to fix it a bit. But it's still of a problem.
2) slow - he's too slow to become toptier. The fact that as a support he's mainly a damage dealer does not fit with everything. Zaul fixing his speed problem, so is SA.
3)effect triggers - when he deal damage to rebels/jedis in end of the turn, he's getting hurt. His unique do more trouble then good vs most of the compositions he came to counter (anti rebel and anti Jedi). Triggers Biggs 100% TM, ,triggers crit immunity and GK taunt, triggers chirrut HoTs. It cause trouble vs the one he should be countering.

So let's see. To get a good tactic around Palp you need Palp L / DN L to make him tanky, you need Zaul L and SA to make him faster, and you need defense around him to stop his attacks from becoming his own death (at least that's true to the movies, he attacked Luke and got backfired hehe)
This tactic can not be done. You cant have a composition good enough for reliable, DS team with Palp. If Zaul could hide him AFTER the attack for briefly, that would be great vs rebel counter (stealth expire in the current turn end, and not in the current turn start) but the fact that he can't, make Palp almost useless at top tier arena.

The fixes needed - bonus to HP, protection,speed, and ZETAS.
Leader should give another thing to counter rebels. Something like for each rebel/jedi enemy, sith and empire allies get 10% offense/defense/Crit damage/whatever, and for each sith/empire ally, Jedi/rebel enemies have -10% critical damage/offense/critical chance/whatever.
unique - doesn't trigger any effects. Nothing. The special damage dealt to shocked+rebels+jedis should be a shadow thing. No Biggs TM gain, no heals (Zarris/chirrut), no GK taunt.
Maybe a little bonus of offense for each shocked enemy will also be great.

TL;DR version : Palp mechanics don't allow him to be in top arena due to failures vs the ones he should counter. No tactics available IMO, and therefore fix suggestion with Zetas.

  • Well, that was long so forgot some synergies with the Zetas and in { } for without the Zetas that were mentioned in original post.
    Vader : shock being dispelled become 2 DoTs. 2 DoTs being dispelled at the same time becomes Shock - so with zader, after a dispel of 2 DoTs, enemy will get again 2 DoTs and a shock. {For every shock, Vader get 15% CC CD and offense. For every DoT, Palp gain 3 speed and 5% defense}

    Royal Guard: whenever Royal guard getting hit, Palp get 10% TM {20% TM and 2% offense, stacking}. Whenever Palp is getting hit, RG will taunt and regain 5% protection {15% protection}

    Rule of 2: if there are only 2 siths in the team, Palp and that Sith gain CD up, CC up. {Speed Up and OffUp aswell} Important thing about this. If the team start with 3 siths and one die, the rule of 2 is applying. Also, rule of 2 combined with zader synergy would make them almost as good as chaze (so sad) like they should be.
