What happens if a Arena Shard "dies" ?

Hiho dear Devs,
i am playing this game since the very beginning....there are some hints that there are hardly more than 100 people in my arena shard that play the game still regularly...are there any plans how to proceed with "dying" Arena Shards or will i wake up some morning and stay on first place forever cause there are no competitors anymore....?
But don´t hurry up in this subject matter, i could live with it ;-)
