I try putting the url in between img and the img with the backslash and add the .gif but it never seems to work. It always just shows the last bit of the url followed by .gif and that's it

You shouldn't be adding the .gif or .jpg. It should be part of the link. So like if you're on google images and find a gif you want to post, you need to be able to navigate to the final source where the URL already ends in .gif. It helps if you click on "View original image" on Google images. So like this:
