Sounds to me that you can't beat whoever is #1 in arena you "paying customer". There is no conspiracy here. Keep paying to get stronger and try again.

Gw difficulty has been said to factor in the highest arena power your team has had in a winning match. So it's understandable that some people are confusing the issue a bit.
