FTP as Challenge/Handicap

The impression I have gotten thus far in the whole P2P/F2P dichotomy is that it has boiled down simply to P2P = money to spend, in varying levels of prosperity, versus F2P who don't have the resources to do so.

Was wondering, however, if there are plenty of F2Ps out there who could easily go wild on crystals and chromium purchases, but don't want to because it would make the game too "easy". Like, what's the challenge in throwing your money at the game until everyone is geared and 7*? Better to grind it out daily and enjoy the gradual improvements in characters, and roster, which reflect in turn in the GW gauntlet, the Arena ranking and progress overall.

I mean, it's nothing to toss maybe $10 to $50 at the game every month, but even for that pittance I don't feel the compulsion because the reward of getting places without payment is much more thrilling. I work in long-term financial investments and insurance so my outlook might be colored by my occupation.

Anyone else out there deliberately hampering progress to play the game this way? Admittedly this approach sort of invalidates some of the recurring complaints on the forums. :)

And if you're curious, my Arena performance is fine, and I complete GW daily with some toon losses and about a dozen retreats or so, having to deal with hardcore 70 teams in about 3/4 of my battles.

  • For me the ultimate objective is to get all characters and gear Max. Since they always add new characters, there is always a challenge. Even though I rank 1 consistently, I do not find my enjoyment in that.
  • I dont spend money because it's not worth it. It's not that I can't afford it, but why drop thousands on a mobile game? I'd much rather buy thirty new PS4 games than spend $1200 on this one game.
  • I never spend money on any game where the money is giving you some sort of in game boost. Makes it more challenging and has more "skill" to it. Not just on GoH, but in any game.

True, and at the highest levels in Arena it's a weird mix of RNG and timing luck/laziness of opposition anyway. I am much the same way in my ultimate objective, though as F2P I admit this will be a long time coming.

Sure, and on some level it's an influence in my decision to stay F2P. But I'm saying I don't even drop $5 on this game, because I enjoy the challenge of it. Still, it's a nice enough game that I do want to throw some money CG/EA's way, but I don't know what I could spend on that would not somehow screw with my current approach.

I don't spend because I don't see value. Maintaining top 20 on server is easy as FTP. I kill time on my train ride then spend way too much time here discussing drop rates. The probability problems presented by this game are interesting and watching the psychology of ayers who insist AI prove more, drop rates get sabatoged when looking for the item are hilarious.

What I enjoy in this game is understanding how to gain the most with the least premium currency possible. Maximizing performance without spending. The problem in these games is that there is no end, no winning, no completion. And once you are willing to spend no cap but money on how far you progress.

So if you lose the constraints what fun is the game. In general my goal is to be competitive with spenders and top FTP.

The enjoyment for me also is the spinning casino reward and whether or not I pay I get my little bit of dopamine.

Couldn't agree with you more. I've thought about it, and wouldn't mind paying either for something worth it, I found what that something is. If they had a shop where you couple purchase ability mats a couple times a month, I would totally throw money at that. Shards and crystals and everything else you can make by being patient.

I have close to 5k crystals (I know, not a lot), but I haven't paid for any yet, and I do a couple refreshes depending on how arena goes, and if I'm close to a shard or an armor or something

I chose not to spend because I see no point on speeding this game up. I enjoy it so far as a game to play on my breaks at work or if im bored at home.
  • If you don't spend large amount of $s then how are people getting high end maxed out toons?

I bet the top tier arena champs are majority P2P.
The F2P top arena champs are crazy skilled, amazing players. But certain that f2p top players are low in %.

There is no way a casual f2p gets to maxed out toons destroying arenas.
But then casuals probably don't care to rock the #1 spot.

No, you can put decent squads together maxed out in a months time f2p. through cantina and GW. For me a Killer whale as another puts it in this post. This game is worth the $$ because I find enjoyment in the collection and acquisition of my character roster.
  • $20-50 a week works for me. I don't invest in character packs or big crystal buys. Everyone has their own opinions. I like to keep my top 15 characters leveled up and geared up. Some players can make it work without spending at all.

The gamer issue is that everyone focuses on arena as qualifier for being a top tier player, defined as DPS speed right now.

Most multiplayer games at this stage will have developed a guild program or annoyingly difficult daily challenge.

To be fair I downloaded EAs "heroes of dragon age" ans the the interface was just awful and gameplay sad. This game is solid and just needs content.
  • I did spend way too much the first week I played. I still have buyers remorse over my first week of impulse buys. But, I've settled down and burn about 1000 crystals a day. Mostly chasing gear drops.
  • A guy my server has easily spent upwards of a thousand dollars and we are only about a week in. Rotates in different 7 stars when most of us in the top 20 are ~4-5.

I say more power to them, but as inferred earlier, that's similar to using cheat codes. You're just going to burn yourself out quicker and have less fun in the process. Embrace the grind, in game and in life :)
  • I play F2P for the challenge, I get satisfaction from building a team from scratch and seeing the potential develop into a synergistic squad. I utilize Swgoh Cantina to help me foresee how the game will evolve so that I won't get left behind when the meta changes. I feel kind of like a baseball GM that is always working on a future team, and seeing my players develop is part of the fun. I'm currently running 6* QGJ lead, 7* Lumi, 7* GS, 7* ST Han, 7* RP. I find that the game is very fair to F2P players that can manage to stay in the top ranks.

I Googled this game and one of the things I came across were exploit programs. Sometimes I wonder if a guy on my server is using one. He is 5 levels above everyone else and we have some whales on our server. He never moves from #1 in arena. Has this been addressed on the forum?
  • Yes, very early on. They are client side exploits, mostly giving your toons a massive power advantage. Course, often your caught and have your account banned

I don't do badly in Arena. Certainly I am swimming in whale-infested waters at those ranks, but that is part of the insane challenge. And it's not a young server, been playing since mid-December. I don't know if I am "crazy skilled" but I may have slightly better luck with the RNG than the average person.

And I may be F2P but I don't know if I count as "casual". I'm highly competitive IRL so that kind of carries over into everything I do, even this delightful time sink.

I think what I envy of the P2P players is that they have more variety in their build choice. I am forced to max out the meta-viable, stronger toons of the bunch even if I may not really enjoy their style so much, to remain where I am rank-wise and consistent with GW. If I decided tomorrow I wanted to blow the $$$ it would be so that I could mess around with a theme build or try a quirky strategy like a team of characters that stun/counterattack.
