need some clarification

I know if you fail to get a star in a territory, you have to redo that territory during the next phase. But let's say you are in the territory with the IPD mission. You have 6 people complete it which would net you 12 shards. But you don't get a star. Do you still get the shards and then get to redo the phase, giving you the chance to redo the battle and get the shards AGAIN? Or is there something that makes it so you only get them once?

You get the six completions from the first time thru, If you fail to get a star and redo that phase, the special mission is greyed out for day two,,
