I had no problem getting the 3 stars with my Phoenix Squad (people should stop advising newer players to not gearing them above gear 8!) . As long as they have enough health and tenacity, and you use Sabine instead of Chopper, just sit out the attacks and then fight back.
P.S.: The only one who dies during my first try was Carth himself, hehe. Not sure though if the event was really meant to be like that, when the event character can die before getting one turn at all.
Sure that works for pve but for pvp gearing them past thrawn needs is low on the list.
Oh, not at all. Gearing them up constantly guaranteed me an awesome start on ships and an early top spot in my fleet arena, which has a better payout than squad arena anyway. Besides that, I actually still love their variability on pve, but never underestimate them for pvp, too, e.g. as a solid defensive squad in TW.
