At t6, you can still apply dots. Aim for about 100% potency on your DOT-appliers.
I used to run zeta Vader lead, Tusken Shaman, Boba Fett, Hermit Yoda, and Darth Sidious. Tusken Shaman applies two DOTs on basic attack (so does Gam Guard - and he has higher base potency so might be better for this). Try and time the skills so that right after Nihilus takes a turn, someone is trying to apply multiple DOTs on the first attack (so Shaman basic, Vader Force Crush, Sidious AoE, etc).
In tier 6, I think I've stacked 30-ish DOTs up on Nihilus, which makes for really fun Culling Blade and Execute from Vader and Boba.

This and you need to try and time your attack for after his turn when his potency resets.
