Why is space locked? And: a guide?

My guild (92m GP) is trying this TB for the first time, and yes, I know it's probably too hard for us. My question relates to game flow. We don't entirely understand how territories lead from one to the next. We one-starred the bottom-most territory in phase 1, and we're trying to do the same in the bottom-most territory in phase 2. But the space battle territory in phase 2 is locked, and it doesn't explain why. How do we unlock it?

More generally, is there a basic guide to this TB somewhere? Basic stuff like how one area feeds into the next, for example?

You have to get a star in a territory that borders the one you want to open it. In this case you needed to get a star in the top in p1 to open ships.
