There's justification for either.
Lower GP - ostensibly had to work harder, use better strategy.
Higher GP - a reward for collecting more resources in-game.
Random - probably better overall, but then both players have more uncertainty during the battle.
Any decision they make will always be criticized by a player who is inconvenienced. /shrug
If anything it should be that the person who is lower should win due to superior strategy. Lame
Building your roster GP to win ties is also strategy. So, everything is fine as it is, right?
And how exactly does that cunning "strategy" work, given that only the highest GP player in a division is guaranteed to never face an opponent with more GP and even they could face an opponent with the same GP?

Not an inconvenience. It's throwing a victory to someone with a few hundred thousand more GP that I should've never had a chance against IF they had a proper roster. They should have crushed me yet here we are.
GAC opponents are matched based on top X GP. If you had the same score, you didn't have a better strategy, since the top X delta isn't a few hundred thousand. You had a similar strategy. CG stated with the start of GAC that they wanted to discourage GP suppression and encourage building your roster, hence better promotion rewards in higher divisions. Having the lower GP win a tie-break would be counter to that goal.
It's not a tie-breaker. The highest GP only has to match his opponent's score to win and knows this going into the setup phase. That makes it a strategy or win condition, not a tie-breaker.

As with all other strategies, you increase your chances at winning. Plain and simple. As with most other strategies, there are no guaranteed wins.
The top X GP difference is usually so small that it’s not a factor in the battle. I wish they would find a different method only to stop the discussion about it. It’s essentially just random
Person with the larger muscles and technique lifts more?
Those are positives, but not absolutes.
It's not: Person A is 6'9" Person B is 6'10" so all tip-offs go to Person B.
It's: Person B has a better chance.
GP tie breakers don't work that way. As soon as you're matched up, you know who will win any "tie" that may occur.

Imagine it this way: All MLB ties go to the highest paid roster. No more extra innings. You can see who will win any ties for the whole season by comparing teams. Saves time and money!!

Your strategy obviously is "superior" if you don't score more points than the other player.
