Fact: Tomatoes, when first introduced in Europe, were thought to be poisonous. What really happened was that because tomatoes are so acidic, they would leach lead from the pewter plates that were commonly used. This resulted in many dying from lead poisoning and tomatoes earning the nickname "poison apple".
