Ship Ability Materials

This might a relative noob issue, but I just got ships opened within the last couple of days. I have acquired some ship ability materials, but I see no way to use them to upgrade my ships. What am I missing?

Do I have to reach a certain threshhold of stars or level on the ships before I can apply those or what?

iirc it depends on level of the ship. try clicking on ship abilities and it will pop up and show what you need or say "level x needed for this upgrade" or w/e. Since you just unlocked ships I would recommend googling strats/trying to get your ships good for that arena, it's less competitive usually than char arena.
