Since I will probably never hold first I was wondering who number 1 battles?

For Daily achievements i smack the 2nd and 3rd rank guys below me, if i happen to slip ranks i simply smack them in a quick 1-2minute and take it back.

1st can challenge 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

2nd can challenge 1st, 3rd, and 4th.

You do not move when challenging a player lower than you if you lose btw.
