Process for changing guild leader role

I searched Answers HQ but could not find information about how a guild can go about changing leadership roles. Our leader is still active, and there are several officers, but our leader no longer wants to be leader. Can he simply assign it to someone else? Or does he have to demote all but one officer and then leave the guild to have the remaining officer become leader by default?

When the leader leaves the guild he/she can select an officer to take over as leader.
