Why the slot machine mechanics for packs

Why is it almost every single pack has slot machine mechanics. Would it kill you guys to just say “here’s a bunch of relic material for $20, have at it” instead of only a 5% chance of getting your money’s worth?

I mean come on….you guys would make so much more money if you just told us what we are buying without these surprise and gotcha mechanics

While I agree it would be better for the players to know exactly I highly doubt the gaming developers of world agree with you. Soooooo many games out there do the exact same thing, and I am sure they know how much money they need/want to make better than us at this point.

Just because you would spend more, doesn't mean everyone else would. Look past your blinders a little.

The info is paywalled off lol. What’s the data showing on revenue compared to their peak year in 2017?

Well, November and December are missing
  • Assuming these are calendar years, it looks like anywhere from a 15-30% hit from where one might draw the "expected" line. I put it at $110M, if the goal is stability.

Based on these stats, one can only wonder what the results would have looked like had the July road map and beyond never come to fruition. I'd be really interested to see how that $90M for 2021 breaks down month by month.

Without those data, we can only surmise whether the 6 months of cash grab were the start of the slide, or a means of softening the fall.

True but unless they have some amazing deals coming up or must buy kraken snacks I can’t see them coming close to 100 mil especially if they can’t more than double their monthly average to date. But that just reinforces my point. Based on their current product they put out, people aren’t going to spend on a slot machine. There would be a much higher revenue stream if they just said what we are buying. How much higher? Not sure but knowing what you are buying is far more tempting and attractive than a guessing game

Monthly Calenders and battlepass are new. Awesome

But who is really buying them? I’m hoping people aren’t buying that lame battle pass but the calendars are even more yikes. The Phoenix one is awful value, the core gear isn’t good and the relic one is…..iffy at best. Waiting all that time to R5 one single toon? That’s my point from before. If I’m waiting all that time I should get to R5 multiple toons by the end of it, not just one.

I’d disagree. I don’t buy a single one of those packs because of how random it is. In MSF they tell you exactly what you’re getting and I’ve spent more on that game than here simply because of that. So many people in my guild and on my discord servers don’t buy the packs simply because it’s so random and they’re so expensive for such high variations on what you get. If I wanted to spend $50 I’d just go to an actual casino or buy a platform game. This isn’t even touching on how expensive there packs are to begin with any way, especially their new calendars lol

They sure don't in msf. I play that game as well. Character packs contain anywhere from 6-130 shards. Sure you could a pack of red stars but once you open them there is 0 guarantee you'll get anything good. How about the Wolverine red star pack for 34.99? You could get a 5, 6 or 7 red star. The gear specific packs might be more stable, buts of options there have the same gotcha mechanics as any other mobile game. The point being is while you don't spend your money on them plenty of others do. Hence why both games have made a billion dollars in less than a decade. Pretty sure they know how to make money.

They also know how to lose revenue. Think about the packs they were selling at the peak of their income streams to now.

As for MSF, you get guaranteed shards and a guaranteed number of orbs. It’s not a slot machine of “oh I’ll get anywhere from 3-10 orbs”. The gear they sell is a “here you go this is what you get”. Same with character shards, same with the number of orbs you’re buying regardless of the type of orb. The deal you pointed out the 5,6,7 red star draft is their most slot machine bundle but if you go off anchor price points, you’re getting applicable value to it and are taking the roll of the dice for better value.

Their calendar deals are their best deals usually as seen with the most recent power core calendar. $5 for about $35-$40 of power cores. That’s the type of calendars SWGOH needs to put out. Not the calendars where you get little to no value by waiting.

They just be worried about revenue since they just announced their hyperdrive bundle is half off from the 17th to the 24th. The issue I see with that is lots of dolphins. whales, and krakens already bought the hyperdrive bundle and are hoping guppies and new players will bite.

Well we will need to agree to disagree on this topic.

But free advice to anyone that wants it:

If you want to be a millionaire talk to millionares about how to make money.
If you want to be a billionaire talk to billionaires how they made money.
These groups know how to make money. The rest of us know how to get by.

I agree with that advice. If you want to make money from your player base you ask your player base what they want. I doubt that players would rather buy surprise and chance mechanic packs over being told what they’re buying. Case in point to the 31% decline in revenue this year to last.

Hopefully those people spend their gift cards on the last 6 days of the year….on this specific game and no other game. You know like MSF, clash of clans, raid shadow legends, and other games that pull in revenue. Even if they break the 100 million mark for the year and buck the monthly average for the year so far they are still down 22% in revenue from last year. That’s not a good look on EoY charts. Like I said, perhaps ask the players what they want instead of telling the players what they should want 🤷🏻‍♂️

And as pointed out already, November and December aren't included. If only there was some gift giving season coming up where millions upon million of gift cards were given and nerds everywhere rushed to mobile devices to use them. Oh well...

Good thing you are speaking for the players. Didn't even need to ask!

Well I’m a player arent I? I specifically stated I don’t like the slot machine packs and won’t buy them. You even said yourself that “ While I agree it would be better for the players to know exactly…” that’s what they want no? So wouldn’t it behoove the devs to sell packs that show us what exactly we are getting to get players like myself to spend my disposable income on their game instead of games like MSF?

While I agree it would be better for the players to know exactly I highly doubt the gaming developers of world agree with you. Soooooo many games out there do the exact same thing, and I am sure they know how much money they need/want to make better than us at this point.

Lmao except I was responding directly to you, but in any case, toodles!
  • I think that revenue lost is not because of high rng packs - they were always like that. IMHO people can spend a lot when they have fun and lower or stop spending when fun declines. I know many long time SWGOH players that quit completely or stopped spending in last few months… Example: to my knowledge, not a single person in my over 350m GP guild consider Conquest 10 fun…
  • Just going off that image, they should easily hit $110M, which would be 2019 levels. A "normal" month is about $12M. If they have 2 normals, puts the calendar year at just over $110. However, if we assume November and December are higher than normal, they could easily approach $120.

As for the other comments: plenty of people are buying the calendars and the battle passes.

So far they are averaging about $8.5 mil a month. November isn’t really offering much as far as deals or big upcoming GL’s n such (depending on crumbs puzzle) so I don’t see November being that big. December could indeed show some uptick and make up for that to keep up with the current monthly average but even then you’re barely cracking 100 much less 110. Idk, I just can’t see the trajectory of the game supporting 12 million+ in sales to push 110 mil for the year

The info is paywalled off lol. What’s the data showing on revenue compared to their peak year in 2017?

via google I can see it

Perhaps they’ll bring back some of the things that made SWGoH fun, and get back some of that lost revenue. Though I know we’ll see more overpriced packs and deals that they’ll come up with to gain back revenue instead of listening to their player base.
I've found this whole experience to be very enlightening.

Thank you for evaluating. Your feedback is appreciated.
