What are shards? What do they do? Thank you all very much in advance!

I'm assuming you mean Arena Shards & not Character Shards?

Arena/Fleet Shards are groups of people that hit the level needed to access them around the same time.

Arena Shards are created every 20K people to hit L40

Fleet Shards are created every 2K people to hit L60.

Your Arena/Fleet shards are fixed so you'll always be with the same 20K/2K people for the life of the account.

The closer you finish to 1st each day the more rewards you get in Squad/Fleet Arena Token rewards.
