Why do I go so often second with my capital ship even though I have the same speed?

You probably just remember those times more readily because it makes the battle more of a struggle. It feels like more than 50% to me too, but I'm pretty sure it's not. I'd recommend tracking it for a few weeks and see what the actual numbers say.
F2P since the last time I bought Kyros, Crystals, or the Conquest Pass.
  • The coin flip for R8 SA is much more frustrating IMO since whoever's TM and foresight train gets going first will easily win the battle and the TM gain will push whichever SA went first's capital ship back up to and past the opposing one even if the opposing cap ship won that coin flip.

This coin flip frustration has already pushed people to R8 SA to be able to easily climb on R5-7 SA, and some in my fleet shard have even taken SA to R9, which is beyond most of my GLs, just because that coin flip can cost us both time and refreshes climbing in FA. The worst part is it's just an arms race until everyone has SA R9 at which point no one has an advantage and everyone who did will have just wasted a giant pile of relic materials.

So WAI for CG. Coin flip metas create frustration speeding which is what CG wants.

    IMHO just climb with Thrawn/Syche

The coin flips don't determine the winner though - they just determine the strategy. If you're bailing after losing the SF coin flip, you're giving up wins. Losing the coin flip means the battle takes about a minute to a minute and a half longer - but it's still an easy win - if a little more frustrating.

Do you have any tips re: strategy? (Ideally one that doesn't include more relics on Sith Assassin). I'm not having any luck at all...

I wouldn't say an easy win, and no I didn't give up, but I'm probably 50-60% in battles that the opposing SA goes first and 99% when my SA goes first. It's obviously hugely impactful to have your SA go first and it's bollocks to say that you 'usually win' going second. You really think that the majority of the players in K2/K1 just recklessly threw R8/R9 on a mediocre squad character like SA if their relic level didn't provide a HUGE advantage in FA/GAC Fleet battles. No veterans are here that don't understand strategy. Please don't gaslight.

If you need to climb though higher relic SAs, you have a much higher success rate with Chinera/Scythe than you will if you know your SA is going second.

I'm gonna disagree with you and agree with herd on this one. I can't remember the last time I lost a Levi mirror after taking it to 7*, and the player I always have to beat for top spot has an r8 SA against my r5. I always lose that coin flip and even if that happens I doubt I lose more than 5% of the time. It usually means i'll lose the race to ult, but even then with careful strategy you should be winning the battle even if it does take a little longer. Time out is a risk sometimes, but outright losing shouldn't be happening. As to why lots of players in K1/2 take that toon to r8/9, it's for ease but not necessity IMO.

The key thing to focus is trying to regularly get the TM gain from taking a ship to under 100% health. That means trying to avoid putting healing immunity on the bomber when they are about to heal up either through sabotage hangars or with the Fury special. Getting dagger out early helps I find (I tried for a little while with Tax1 but didn't find it was any better) as the AoE is a useful one for triggering lots of TM gain if used at appropriate times.

  • I find that if you are able to take out the bomber and one other ship (I usually go for Malgus), that you can generally still win, even though the opponent gets to ultimate. I pretty much concentrate on bomber from the start. Bring in dagger first, even if sabotage hangers is available. By the time you are ready for second reinforcement, you should be able to take out bomber. I then stun SA with 2nd reinforcement and then instakill Malgus. A lot of the time, dagger gets a turn before the reinforcement.

A lot of the time, AI misplays and brings in opponents interceptor as first reinforcement. That makes the endgame tedious, but you avoid the instakill. Some people use phantom as a reinforcement and I find those the hardest matches to win because you will lose a ship and then lose your cap ship.
  • If you lose the SF coin flip, use basics from Fury and SF to keep clearing foresight - your ships will be dazed so there's no point using the assist call and you don't want the heal until after their fighter is dead - , call Dagger and use the AOE to keep clearing foresight. After you call dagger, they'll sabotage your hangars but your next reinforcement is MK6 anyway so it doesn't matter. If their tank is still alive when you call MK6, insta-kill it then take out their SF. If their tank is dead, insta-kill their Fury. SF is super squishy so don't waste the insta-kill on her. Even if you lose the race to ult, as long as you have 5 ships on the board, you can target their mk6 and hit auto once fury is gone.

My SAss is R8, Malgus R5, and everything else is at unlock relics. The guy that takes 1st an hour before me has R8 or R9 on all his pilots. Sometimes I win the opening coin flip but his other ships always go before mine. I haven't tracked it but I win at least 70% of those battles and it's likely much higher than that - I'm being conservative because I don't have data to back up my claim.

  • The coin flip doesn't matter.

Start with B28, Sith Fighter & Fury Class Interceptor (FCI) and you only ever need Tie Dagger and Mark VI.

Here's what you do - you go all in on their B28. When levi goes, 3rd special to slow their capital ship, then on the second turn, reinforce with the Tie Dagger, NOT Mark VI. Keep working down the B28. When levi goes a 3rd time, use the 2nd ability and then on its 4th turn, reinforce the Mark VI.

Here's why Mark VI on the 4th turn is important - It won't blow up from your opponent's 2nd ability, just drop 20 of the 30 stacks, so your Mark VI can survive and then one shot either the B28 (if you haven't destroyed it) or FCI.

If you find yourself in a situation that you've destroyed the B28 and have not reinforced the Mark VI yet, work down the Sith Fighter and then their Mark VI. Just ignore the FCI until you reinforce your Mark VI.

Once you've destroyed their B28, FCI and Sith Fighter, likely you'll get your ship taken over. Totally doesn't matter. Just basic down their Mark VI. IF a reinforcement comes along, switch to that. You should destroy it in 2-4 attacks. Then go back to the Mark VI. Eventually, the Mark VI is the only ship left and you can finish it off.
