Ally choices

I don't know if it's just me... but lately I feel like my ally options when doing battles have been pretty awful in comparison to mine. Usually I'd get comparable at sometimes a bit better ally options than what I can offer. Anyone else notice this? I mean, I'm not asking for a free walkthrough of missions, but I'd like to have some more useful allies.
Which brings me to my next point. I can't seem to get any solid allies. I feel like nearly every ally request I send either gets denied or ignored. Whatupwitthat?
