Raid damage/Turns

If multiple people are fighting Rancor how does the damage work? Seems like the guildies should fight one after another? I've noticed multiple people say they have kill the captain and Rancor on same raid. So even though they are getting credit for their total dmg some dmg is wasted because people are doing dmg to the same percentage of health on the boss.
