Wondering if you should buy chromium cards? Results of 96 card opening

Prev1
This question gets asked a lot, usually followed by a chorus of answering No's. We also see the occasional chromium pack opening post, but those typically only contain 1 or 2 packsoften seem to be “cherry picked” ie-someone gets an incredible pull and decides to post it because they are understandably excited.

I wanted to give a larger sampling of chromium card rewards for people to look at as well as my opinion on whether or not they’re worth it (spoiler alert-not really, with one caveat) in the hopes that some might find the information useful.

I spent $200(u.s.) to purchase a total of 12 chromium mega packs giving me 96 cards to open. Please keep in mind, $200 will only get you 12 packs if you
1. Don’t use any of your crystals to refresh energy for leveling or gear grinding, and
2. Have enough credits that you don’t need to buy more to level up your toons with the shards you get. I personally started with 1.5 million credits and had to buy more to pay for leveling, so in the end I actually spent $300 on crystals. I think this is important to keep in mind when trying to decide the value of these packs

I intended to screen shot these openings then got up this morning to buy them and forgot about the screen shots. Sorry about that.

Since the more toons you have open the few toons you can open through the process, for reference, I started with 45 of 71 toons unlocked.

I know most of you know this, but here are the crystals required to open each star level. I’ve also put what I THINK is the crystal conversion for when you open a X* character that you already have. This is conjecture on my part based on todays results. Since factors I’m unaware my play a roll in this conversion, I could be totally wrong. Please let me know if this conversion is incorrect.

Notes:
Shards obtained: 648 spread across 22 characters

Characters obtained outright
  • 4* Finn
  • 3* Eeth Koth

Toons unlocked with shards: Greedo who then was advanced to 2*

Shards from Toons already 7* and therefore useless : 25 from Luminara (I actually consider myself lucky in that I had stopped leveling JC at 6* to switch to Kylo Ren which kept my 31 JC shards from going to waste)

Significant star ups:
  • Dooku 5* to 6*
  • Leia 3* to 5*
  • QGJ 3* to 4*

So, that’s an idea of what you get for $200, maybe a little better, maybe a little worse. In my opinion, chromium cards are really only worthwhile for 2 sets of people:
1. Those with deep pockets who are ok with spending whatever it takes to build the characters they want…The whales
2. People who are truly gamblers at heart. You like to spend money for a chance at glory. A word of warning, though, this game has been well designed to snag people like this. If you are truly bitten by the gambling but, I recommend not going down this road as most will quickly get **** in and find themselves unwilling and unhappy members of group 1.

For everyone else, the chances of getting what you want aren’t great. The chances of getting enough of what you want to level that toon to 6 or 7*are miniscule unless you really spend money. For instance, the 3 star ups I consider significant:
1. Dooku was purchased for $4.99 in Nov and I’ve slowly chipped away at him, sohe was already 5* when I bought these packs.
2. I had previously purchased 6 other mega packs which is what gave me Leia and QGJ. So, $300 and 5* is the best I have to show for it.

There you have it. Obviously this is just one person’s opinion, and hopefully others will chime in below, but I wanted to post this in the hopes that someone would find it useful.

  • A bunch of junk or a ps4 on sale, hmmm......
  • For someone planning to open a lot at one time it's important then to promote the toons as you go so you receive more shards for conversions?

    Great post!
  • Very informative post. Thanks for sharing that expensive bit of info.
  • Thanks. I was hoping to gamble for Leia but 200 dollars for 2 stars...

Not at all. That's just my own special brand of OCD ;)

  • $200 for a couple of low level characters and a few minor promotions.

Could've bought four full PS4 games for that.
  • Thank you. Not buying chromium any more.

I think EA should revise the packs a bit. You should always get unlocked characters even if they are low stars because there is zero incentive for a new player to buy packs. What is the point of buying a pack to get 10 shards for a 80 shard unlock? Also maybe giving players a free pack a week or something wouldn't be a bad idea. Coming from a game like hearthstone shows me just how F2P friendly it was. You could easily get a pack a day and could play indefinitely without cooldowns or spending money.
  • I have often wondered if there is any control that the people who have an interest in making a profit have over what is pulled and when.

Yesterday I spent 50 bucks for the first time. Previously I spent 20 dollars twice. When I bought 2 8x packs yesterday I pulled almost all 2 star low tier useless crap. The only time I every draw anything good is when I don't draw for a few weeks.... I am positive it is just chance but the more I spend at a time the less quality of a draw that i have.

You mentioned gambling in your post. In Las Vegas they have a gambling commission that is set up to assure that the casinos are not taking advantage of their customers. As far as I know the gaming industry does not have anything like this.

What prevents a company from getting one over on its players other than honesty?

I am not making any accusations here. I just think when there is something so similar to gambling going on then there should be someone keeping all the pay to play games honest.

I know that I would spend more with the knowledge that it would be fair and square with all games.

At least they could list the odds so you would know what you are getting into.

    Just my thoughts
  • Nice post. I had already decided that I wouldn't be buying anymore chromium packs. I might still pick up a solid bundle if one drops.
  • Just wanted to try after i readed this post. gr8 one and thanks btw.
Opened a big pack and this is what i got:

    12 shards of Eeth Koth
    12 shards of Ugnaught
    12 shards of IG-86
    12 shards of Kylo Ren
    10 shards of P Leia
2x 10 shards of Cad Bane
and 25 bonus shards of Cad Bane
  • Thank you for this as it is nice to see someone post what they got over multiple packs.

Funny if people are gamblers and decide they will spend cash on this app to gamble rather than spend the cash on actual ambling and possibly get some real life reward to show for it.

Maybe I'm crazy but if I am going to do some gambling then I'd like to know the reward I may get will actually be useful in the real world rather than characters in a mobile app.

  • 5* Leia is pretty sweet. For some folks, I'd imagine that would be worth the cash alone.

4* QGJ is ~pretty good~ (not great but good).

Can you clarify something?: When you receive a character you already have, then the shards are converted based on the level you had them at when *you first unlocked them*, right?

Ex: I unlock JC at 1* and then promote him to 6*, I'm always only going to get converted 7 shards if I pull the character, is this correct?

    PS Thanks for sharing.

A given toon always converted at the same rate for me. IE Leia always converted at 15 shards, FOTP always converted at 7 shards. However, I do not know what determined this conversion rate, and unfortunately, I do not remember what * level each of them was first unlocked at for me.

I'd love to hear from anyone who's figured out how its determined how many shards a character is converted to.

  • Maybe the solution will come if they implement a shard exchange system.

No, conversions are based on the base level of the toon. It's 25 for a toon that starts out at 3* regardless of what you have him at now.

I think Chromium cards may be worthwhile for new players where you have a greater chance of unlocking full toons instead of getting lousy conversion rates on stuff you already have. It's definitely a case of diminishing returns for established players.

I definitely share this opinion. Google could implement a voluntary code of conduct for free to play games that have strong gambling aspects. So we all knew that odds were constant, or we would be informed if they were adjusted. Right now they have a license to steal, if so inclined. I got multiple refunds for another game, because they played so fast and loose with rules for special events as well as constantly nerfing characters a week after players went crazy obtaining them. So at least Google is responsive to players getting cheated, even though officially they don't refund IAPs.

There is only a few characters. Wouldn't take long to unlock them all.
  • I've been grinding away trying to get 2,520 crystals for the 8 chro pack and finally had enough today to buy it, wanted to get kylo, so i bought it because it was the best chance at getting kylo, not one shard I didnt get 1 freaking kylo shard, i got usless consular shards and other shards i dont need, now I'm back to 0 crystals and nothing to show, hate this. Anyon know any way for quick crystals without buying?
  • Stay away from packs unless your goi g to spend lots of money. Best to use crystals to refresh energy.

Kylo is farmable on a cantina nod. So the faster you lvl the faster you can start grinding his shards for free
  • Least you got some consular shards. He might be a beginner character, but his healing will prove useful in both the near and far future.

  • That sucks. I did the same exact thing when I got my hands on this game, except I bought the 8 chro pack. I got a whole bunch of random shards and mace windu

I only bought crystals for an x8 pull once. I was new, so I figured if I was ever going to do it, the beginning would be the best time to do so. I did a lot of research first and saw a lot of videos over youtube as well just to get an idea.

    I got the following myself:
    • 12 Resistance Pilot (I'm thinking on dedicating an entire GW's win to get 15 shards for him, just so I get another LS toon for the achievement, and the Vader shards!)
    • 10 Aayla Secura (now I need 40 shards since she's only Chromium. Well 39 now, I actually got one today on my last chest on GW! :D)
    • 12 Chewbacca (relatively worth it, since I still use Chewie from time to time, mostly in PvE, though I can farm him without problems in Cantina)
    • 12 Tusken Raider (I also got one shard from a Bronzium or GW chest, don't remember now. No plans for me on farming him yet, he's 50 shards and I have no interest for him)
    • 10 Kit Fisto (now I need 15 for him and he's only Chromium, most likely he'll remain in shards)
    • 2* Princess Leia (most likely she'll remain at 2* since she's only Chromium. But I still use her for PvE sometimes :))
    • 3* Hoth Rebel Trooper (used him a bit for PvE since a 3 star was better than 1-2 stars or nothing :) this was my plan, to get something new to help me on my early days)
    • 2* Resistance Trooper -> Converted to shards since I already had that one. (If I get some more over Bronziums I may use the upgrade just for the achievement)

I guess I didn't go that bad. But I've had more luck with Bronziums over the time, honestly. I've pulled a 4* Mace Windu, and some 1-2 stars as well, many of them repeated, but those shards counts towards upgrades, hence achievements. And since the Bronziums are free, anything's good.

I doubt I'd ever buy another pack, since as OP has stated, this is mostly for Whales, big gamblers, or in summary people with a lot of money to throw in IAPs, which I don't. Even less when there isn't something certain for me in return. I'd rather wait for packs and see if they offer something worth my while. :)

  • I don't understand how when you get a duplicate character that's 1* you only get 7 shards while if you get shards instead, you get 12. It's very counterintuitive. The rarer pull is actually much worse...
