It's definitely the wrong forum, but since you're here.........
Disclaimer: With the purchase by disney, ALL of the expanded universe books are been removed for SW canon. Their "history" is being rewritten starting with episode VII... so if you don't care that none of these stories will ever be made mainstream, then carry on!
New Jedi Order is great, but if you haven't read a lot of SW books you might want to read another series first. NJO is very long(like over ten books-omg, there are actually 21!), and it takes place like ~20 years after Episode VI.
So if the Thrawn series is your first foray into the EU, you won't know a ton of the characters in NJO. You should probably be at least read it's follow up series, "the Hand of Thrawn" also written by Zahn.
Michael Stackpole was another great SW author, he did some Rogue squadron books and some other awesome ones.
If you're going to read NJO reading these books first will give you the best back story(and these are some of the best SW books out there):
- The X-wing series(at least one or two of them)
- The Jedi Academy series is incredibly relevant
- The Thrawn series
- The Hand of Thrawn dualogy
All optional of course, if people can read game of thrones and keep up with all those brand new characters/lore, than NJO should be a walk in the park.
