How do you find out how many players are in a shard?

How many players still play the game in the shard? Do I have to put my 5 worst characters in and see how far I fall in a week?

I don't see any other way to find out. I would be intrested to know too

This. A level 1 ugnaught should do the trick.

But how you know if players who beat you are really human, not bots?
Actually I think my arena are all bots.....

I'd like to know if I'm spending money to play against 5000 people, or if the only ones left are like top 200

Most likely only 200 if you're on an old shard, possibly less.
