Shard shop exlusive character...and you're giving us the heads up so we "don't spend all our currency before he arrives."
If I weren't so insulted by the shard shop, this would be funny.
I've spent a lot of money helping fund your game and I've enjoyed what the experience you've given me. Like many pay to play players tho, I stopped buying packs because of all the redundant character shards I was getting.
I was under the impression that the shard shop would be both a thank you to the people that have been funding your game, and an incentive to begin buying packs again.
I just traded in all my excess shards and was impressed with how much currency I received. Then I took a long look at the shard shop selection. I looked again. Then again. All I can see is a giant middle finger. Maybe some EA personnel laughing at me for spending money on their game, too.
I have access to zero of the characters I would like to trade for shards of, and of the 6 characters offered, I JUST traded in excess shards on 4 of them.
6 characters a day and only 2 shards each of these pre chosen characters. Not much of a thank you for the game funding. It would take over 45,000 currency to take a character from scratch to 7 stars in the shard shop, so it's not like you really have to worry about an abundance of P2P characters popping up suddenly at 7 stars. It takes 15,000 currency just to take a character from 6 to 7 stars. Those of you who have traded in shards already know that this represents a seriously enormous number of excess shards.
So what would it hurt to let us pick the players we want to buy shards for? I don't see how it could hurt pack sales, as people would be buying more hoping either for the character they're working on or for more currency.
I don't know. And I no longer care. Your shard shop has created another F2P player. Well done.
It takes 3500 extra shards to unlock a new hero and get them to 7*
You could unlock and get 10 chars by farming them for that
Also it's ridiculous that the game can't check what heroes you already have at 7 and not put them in the shop. I only have 3 heroes at 7 and one of them was the in the shop today, you have to be kidding
I'm starting to see the truth now.
After all the money I spent on this game, I kept quiet time and again, disappointment after disappointment. I had hoped that EA would be gracious enough to remember that those that spent money of this game deserve some repsect. I can see that this is not the case now.
Well written OP. It's about time people spoke up. Much respect for you being the one to do so.
Since characters you have already maxed out are not removed from Chromium packs you are frequently spending crystals that you paid good money for and receiving useless excess shards. The solution to that was supposed to be the shard exchange, however at the current exchange rate it is a joke. Out of the last 8 pack I bought, 2 out of the 8 Chromium packs gave me Luminara shards - a character I've had maxed for months. In the shard exchange those 24 extra shards will convert to enough shard credits to receive.....2 shards (and as the OP pointed out, the choices of who to even buy are dismal).
So now - my "reward" for spending actual cash on the game is being slapped across the face by receiving useless shards from the pack - and then further insulted by taking those shards and reducing them to 1/10th of their value in the exchange. That is a horrid return on my investment.
The character selection to trade will automatically filter out maxed characters and shuffle every refresh.
That's what I would do, sadly; this will take approving from a board; that is greedy and wants to maximaze revenue. These **** don't even play games.
Their only job is to bring in the $$$$
Because of this; they constantly blunder and ruin beloved games, and either ignore compliants as revenue keeps coming anyway OR people boycott their product enough that they attempt to fix the issue.
You'd think that would be that right?
Nope! Because often times, the issue is passed onto the same corporate **** who have no idea what an average salary is. They make a remisson that is as stupidly unfair as the last.
And the game loses popularity and withers and dies.
EA have too many of these fools in charge.
You know how to make a game that makes a lot of money that also pleases the customers?!
Leave someone whose job is to play it on a daily basis with no mod advantages in charge.
He'll get annoyed when we do, he'll fix what **** him off like it does us; and he'll not be an ****.
Companies are buried in crappy systems that are too generalized.
Games need a different system than general business for God's sake! I wish I could run my own company, it seems common sense is lost in the majority of the business world.
And what happens if the exchange rate doesn't change and the exclusive costs 3500 extra 7* shards to get to 7*. That's the cost of 10 other characters getting to 7*.
And there is no way the character will be worth it. If he/she/it is good enough, all the big spenders will have them asap and everyone else will quit because the new OP hero isn't available to any but the top 1% of spenders.
Only solution is to make the exclusive a highly wanted character, make the exchange rate for the new hero 2:1 or 1:1 and make them above average but not OP. And I don't think any of us have faith that that is what is gonna happen.
So get ready for either a bunch of nerf posts for a new OP character available to only a few, or more rants/complaints cause the shop sucks cause the new toon is worthless and costs way too much
This is why they made it so that the shard shop cannot be refreshed. This way the most anyone could buy is 1 pack of the character per day. That being said, only high-spenders will have enough extra shards to do that...but at least they won't 7* the character the same day it's released!
That's my 2 cents. Peace
Some good points made here.
After a few days of dealing with the shard shop, I have not deviated from my initial opinions. I've gotten a total of 6 useful shards so far (4 Vader shards, 2 Rey shards). Not exactly game changing. Or even really noticeable.
If they were concerned with the fact that people could just continue farming currency by using GW/arena tokens on already maxed characters, that would be easily solvable by simply no longer allowing you to purchase shards from these locations for characters that you already have at least 330 shards for (the total needed to get anyone from scratch to 7). I actually expected them to do that when they opened the shop.
But I also expected the shop to be a place where you could use your excess shards to improve your characters in a realistic amount of time. Even if you have enough currency to take a character from 6 to 7 stars, they would have to appear in the shard shop 50 times as it currently stands. First of all, I doubt very many players have enough currency (1000 extra shards worth), and second and more importantly, that's a process that would take months and months and months.
I just don't understand the business end of it. Because of the high exchange ratio, even the biggest spenders are not going to get game breakingly better, even if they could spend their currency on who they want, when they want. But it would help stimulate pack sales, because people would know most of the shards could eventually be used. As it is, I'm interested in so few shards from the shard shop that I can get enough currency for them simply by buying excess shards for Luminara, Phasma, Sidious, etc. So beyond everything else, it's just bad business.
And if they conduct their business poorly enough, we will no longer have a game to play.
Anyhow thanks for the support guys, glad to know I'm not the only one feeling insulted by their generosity to those who've been funding the game.
And it's in everyone's best interest that this game continues to be funded.
P.S. I love this game. I love most of the update. I want to see more events, challenges, new characters, etc. Fix the shard shop EA.
And if others feel the way I do (and some seem to), the shard shop is actually causing them to lose money when it is a golden opportunity for them to increase sales.
To use your gambling analogy, it's like a casino suddenly tells you that they're gonna comp rooms for big spenders, but then they show you to a broom closet. Who's gonna stay in the broom closet to gamble again the next day? You won't. You take your winnings or your losses and you go home and next time you go to a different casino.
The house always wins when people actually gamble, but the shard shop is like asking people to stop gambling.
I like your analogy, but it doesn't quite fit the shard shop. It would be as if the casino had its own unique exchange rate so they when you're ready to cash out you only actually get 1/10 of the value of your chips, in hotel/casino credit only.
Yeah I was halfway through it before I realized I had no idea where j was going with the analogy haha
Are they talking about my excess shards too?
This made me lol
"The goal with the Shard Shop is to provide players with a chance to try and get the last few shards of a character and to provide some value for shards post-7*."
"I can't speak to that, yet. But suffice to say, the exclusive character won't take as long to acquire."

I was hopeful it would be 1:1 ratio, cool new characters available, provide a quicker option to try new characters but unfortunately it didn't turn out that way. I'm stockpiling GW and Arena tokens like crazy hanging on to a shred of hope that the new character will be good, unique and reasonably obtainable.
This is true. But, given the restraints of the current system and the fact that I can get any excess shards I need for currency by buying Lumi/Sid/Savage/Poggle tokens, I don't see how it will ever be successful in its current form. Why buy more packs when I only want 1of the available shard shop characters each day (if not 0)and can get those from easily expendable GW and arena currency? I seriously haven't touched the original currency I traded in the very first day of the patch. A brilliant man once said:
The shard shop could've (could still become, I suppose) a place that helped EA sell more packs while helping the people who bought packs get more of their money's worth. Yes I and they understood what they were getting into when they bought packs. That's not the issue here. This is about how the shard shop could be hurting rather than helping pack sales, I.E. the funding of our game. Right now it's just a place to toss your unneeded GW currency at.
But what about the exclusive character? Given the shard shop format, I believe EA has backed itself into a lose/lose situation here with this character. Let's say they make him pretty cheap to unlock, but he only unlocks at 4 stars and you gotta get the rest 2 by 2. We could expect to see the first 7 star version in maybe 3-5 years haha. Even if they specifically made him available every single day, it would be 120ish days and an absolute boatload of currency before anyone got him to 7. Ok, so maybe they let us unlock him at 7 then? Well how much should he cost then? If you don't price him out of F2P range (meaning more than you could make simply by daily buying excess shards with your tokens), then the P2P players would be furious because their excess shards would be just as worthless as they were before the patch. I mean, they can trade in tokens for excess shards too, so what about the excess shards they paid for? Ok, so let's price him stratospherically high. Now F2P players and anyone who isn't a P2P whale will complain. First of all they should have cut off the ability to buy excess shards from F2P locations when they opened the store (once 330 shards have been acquired, the character is greyed out). It's having the ability to make currency in that easy and free method that makes basically any shard shop exclusive character decision a losing propesct.
Who knows, maybe they'll surprise me.
I do love 7* Yoda...
I'm gonna stay over here, in this life raft, safely not spending money anymore, until I see whether they hit that iceberg or not. For the sake of everyone who loves and plays this game, please divert course EA.
im very curious what the cost will be of the shard shop exclusive character, I have 15,000 "shard credits" or whatever they are called, from spending way too much on this game, but I have a feeling I wont even be close to having enough shard credits to unlock this shard shop only character...so how are people going to get this character unless they spend like 5-10K on this game? im not sure what the unlock price will be for this character, but if its the same cost as the other characters in the shard shop you'll need about 45,000 shard credits to get them to 7*, so I would need to spend 3X more money than what I have on this game already (which is a lot) to unlock this character if that is how they are going to swing it, if thats the case then i'd say 0.5% of people will have this character and the rest wont, thats just an extra slap in the face on top of an already useless shard shop (it doesnt help F2P or P2P as it is now, its useless in every meaning of the word)
with all that said, im joining the "former" whale club, not spending anymore on this game until the devs realize they are destroying it slowly and losing players left and right over greedy decisions they dont need to implement but do anyway just to pinch the last pennies out of everyones pockets
I have also spent way too much money on this game and I don't have enough shard shop currency to take even a single character from 6 to 7*. But what's more insulting is I haven't even needed any of that currency to get any of the shards I've gotten so far: like I mentioned, I can just buy GW/Arena guys I already have maxed out.
And yeah for Yoda you not only need 5x7* Jedis, they also need to be fully upgraded and you need to get lucky. I did get Yoda (after 100's of attempts) but I can understand how people who haven't been able to get him could see that battle as another insult.
And since the shard shop doesn't work, it's not like you can go and farm a certain Jedi you don't have at 7* yet to try a different Jedi team out against Yoda.
