I liked the movie except the Leia scene and Phasma's death.
Snoke was just a stepping stone. The king is dead, long live the king. I'm fine with that.
I felt like they could have turned Phasma's revenge on Finn into a compelling story arc, but... missed opportunity
I loved the Kylo/Rey relationship and her parents are exactly who I thought they were.
I thoroughly enjoyed Poe's arc and Finn and Roses story was required to make it work. I know everyone else thought that part was boring. I liked it.
    Yoda was perfect!
Luke was exactly what everyone expected.
Hux was marginalized and turned into a joke. I hope he gets a revenge arc where he tries to stab Kylo in the back and lead the FO himself. Otherwise, waste of a character.
I'm not sure how I felt about the death of Luke. Was he supposed to be Snoke's opposite and died because Snoke did? If so, where does that leave Rey and Kylo? Did he die because he used too much power? IDK, it was just weird or I just didn't understand it.

    Hahahahahahahahaha wait what?

Very powerful, lots more tricks up his sleeve than ROTJ Luke
    Bitter old hermit
Reluctant to return to teaching or fighting
    Regretful of his failures
    Still learning from his masters
Ultimately DID return to teaching and fighting
    Self sacrificing
    One with the force
    Now, possibly even more powerful
Anyone expecting something else? You thought he went to the dark side? It would have been a cool twist, but, not what I was expecting.

Especially Fresh out of medical pod Finn dripping bacta everywhere.
Seriously, though, he should have flown into that cannon. Or continue sweeping corridors, only this time for the Resistance.

(Im curious to hear what @Boo thinks of how snoke was handled)

    Haha - Hey @DatBoi

These were my issues with the movie:

    * Leia/Space scene was strange, surprising a bit cheesy. I wanted her to die as how can they explain her character away come Episode 9? But allowed myself to see how powerful the force can be and it made the scene (for me) ok. But I am still puzzled as to where to go with Leia's character now.

    * Porgs - didn't think I would like them, but was surprised. They were not annoying in the end and added some small value of humour to the movie.

    * Luke - I liked what they did with his character. I was unsure of where his story was going and if he were to end up being some sort of Darth Traya to the story - secretly working to destroy the force and all users of the force - but was happy how everything turned out - well almost everything. His death was ridiculous. He just vanished - unlike Yoda dying of old age, Luke just stared into the sunset and vanished! What a disappointment to such a legendary character. He may as well have just physically shown up at the end and died - I thought "throwing his character away" at the end of the movie was a cheap move.

    * Yoda - what a pleasant surprise. Some people have issues that he could touch in "ghost form" - not me. Darth Vader says the power to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the force, then Kenobi said, "If you strike me down I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine". So yoda calling upon lightning and touching things did not bother me. If Patrick Swayze can learn to touch things in the movie "Ghost" then I am sure Yoda can, lol. I do like Yoda's appearance and how they tried to make him look more like the Yoda puppet from ESB and ROTJ. His quirky personality mixed with wisdom was there and brilliant as always. I was surprised by his agreement with Luke to let the Jedi die - but that was explained in his wisdom during that scene with Luke - so all good here.

    * Rey - I did not miond that her parents were no one. The movie successfully explained why Kylo was weak enough to allow an untrained force user to beat him (at the end of TFA) and also explained why Rey is so powerful. It was the Will of the force - which I said was a possibility and trumps everything - even bloodline such as the famous Skywalker power. It was the force's way to balance the galaxy as Kylo became strong in the darkside the force had to create a champion/hero of the light to maintain balance. I also liked her character development in this movie.

    * Kylo/Ben - I never thought he would be redeemable in the eyes of the audience after killing such a loved legendary character and his father: Han Solo. But a few weeks before the movie I though it "may" be possible and the whole movie had me guessing where he and Rey are gonna go. I liked the chemistry between them in their force visions learning more about eachother and growing to like and respect one another. Ultimately it was great that he could not finish his path towards the light and takes full leadership of the First Order. his is something Vader never did and it will certainly be interesting to see how this unfolds into Episode 9.

    * Maz - what a wasteful scene having her in the movie and battling something while on holoscreen. The movie just decided to throw Maz in there for the sake of it and allowed us as viewers to see she was not some small old alien - but can certainly handle herself in battle situations - SO very likely she will make it into this game and other games in this fashion. Still a completely waste of time scene.

    * Holdo & Poe - loved the chemistry between them in the movie - Hold you think is just a twit without a plan throughout the entire movie, but Poe just needs to learn his lessons and impulsivity - great little story arc there!

    * Finn & Rose - A needed story arc to the overall story of the film, but pretty dull and over the top CGI stuff. I never grew to like Rose as a character. Rose loves Finn and Finn clearly still loves Rey - possible awkward love triangle in the next movie (and maybe Poe loves Finn too, lol)

    * 3P0, R2 & BB8 - loved BB8, he is fantastic! 3P0 still the same and liked him in the movie. I was disappointed with R2 - loved the scene with him and Luke in the Falcon, but was disappointed with R2's lack of anything in this movie (similar to his role in TFA).

    lastly:

    * Snoke - I loved his intro in this movie and his exhibit of power, manipulation and dominance. However, he was underused greatly. He was like the COunt Dooku of this Sequel Trilogy. I loved the thrown room, his guards, the fight scene etc - fantastic! but thought that his character was not explained enough. We still have no idea where he came from or how he was so powerful - what is his relationship to the crumbling Empire turned First Order? He is still a mystery and I dislike that very much. If Rey is the balancy of Kylo then who or what was the balance of Snoke?

Summary - overall I lovede the movie but my main two issues are:

    1. Luke's Death
    2. Snoke's existence.

Perhaps the two are connected. Perhaps, as Rey's rise to power was to balance that of Kylo Ren in the force, maybe Snoke's rise to dominance over the FO and the Dark Side was the forces answer to the sole surviving Jedi - Luke Skywalker? And why Luke vanished/died after Snoke's destruction?

But, for this to be the case, Snoke is obviously ancient and predates Luke significantly. So I don't buy it. He still requires a backstory or some explanation for sure.

-I wasn't a fan of Leia pulling a Peter Quill in the first Guardians of the Galaxy and floating through space

-Luke squeezing milk straight from Loch Ness monster's ... mammary glands ... and drinking it was the best scene in the film, seriously I loved it

-the reliance on misdirection starting with the trailers and continuing through the opening title crawl is annoying. Once the film starts why are you still trying to make me think this is going to be an ESB remake? It wasn't, which is a good thing, but they kept making it sound like it was going to be

-the first sentence of the title crawl immediately annoyed me. Why is the first order in charge of anything? Why is the resistance so pathetic? Last time we saw the first order they got their major weapon destroyed. They've never been established as the guys in charge in the same way the Empire was in the OT. Suddenly they're ruling the Galaxy? This ties in to issues I had with TFA.

-I love that Chewie barbecued a porg. I wish those things hadn't been in the movie but at least they didn't get much screen time.

-BB-8 is annoyingly capable. As in, he shouldn't be able to do all the crazy stuff he does. And his evil twin works for the FO. What the.....?

-I loved Yodas scene. He's such a little **** and he's still teaching Luke stuff. But he kind of looked weird... Was he a puppet with CGI laid over him or just pure CGI made to move like a puppet? Strange.

-speaking of Yoda, Maz's scene was terrible. Let me get this straight: she's FaceTiming them while fighting some people? It felt shoehorned in

-some of the humor felt out of place. I would have liked a more serious tone throughout. Like after Luke gets shot by a million lasers and brushes the dirt off his shoulder. Come on......

That's it for now. I'm sure I'll post more thoughts after repeat viewings

Remember this movie takes place immediately after TFA - the FO destroyed the republic and the republic forces/fleets - the Resistance was on their own and gave all they had to destroy Starkiller Base at the end of TFA - essentially (like the rebels in TESB - the resistance was very much on the run from the FO - now the dominate force in the galaxy).

Totally agree with you re: Maz's scene - it felt awful to me as well.

Rey and Finn get together and make the franchise’s first interracial Jedi baby. He is the real chosen one.
Was very excited to see it last night...special preview show. Good movie. Worth the butter popcorn.

Because he is the true mix of dark and light?, lol

    Impressions:

I get the feeling that Rian Johnson didn’t really like TFA, and I’m reminded that JJ Abrams made Lost: that was another instance of throwing things at the wall to see what sticks, then having to come back later to clean it all up:
    - Phasma: cool looking, no real purpose in TFA; gets thrown down a garbage chute. Comes back in TLJ - gets killed off (maybe not, but based on the sort of ‘cutting out the dead weight’ feel of the movie I’m still thinking yes)
    - Rey’s parents - big mystery in TFA; nope - they were nobodies after all. Rey is unique and interesting because she is who she is.
    - Snoke - extremely powerful, has obviously been through some bad **** - who could it possibly be?; doesn’t matter anymore. He’s dead

Also some weird moments that seemed way too forced, or picked up and later dropped:
    - ‘got them on a string’. Ooh, interesting - why is Snoke so gleeful about this? Do they have a spy in the Resistance sending them intel? Is this a mystery that they’ll solve by the end of the movie, just in the nick of time? Nope. The FO just has some new tech.
    - The SuperLeia thing was just ridiculous. But so was the fact that no one addessed it. Just ‘oh, look at that! Now let’s never speak of it again...’
    - Why was Benicio del Toro even in the movie? Guessing something more next movie? Or, if they’re true to form, We’ll see him get killed off in a 30 second snippet about 45 minutes into movie 9?

That being said - I still enjoyed it. I think the acting from the principal players was very good, and I thought Mark Hamill was amazing - he’s come light years from the semi-woodiness of the original triology. Agree that his death was kinda ****, but he really did go out on a high note.

I agree, I felt that much of what Abrams set up in TFA was cast aside in TLJ.

2 big mysteries that had the fans in the franchise debate and theorize for 2 years! - Who are Rey's parents and Who is Snoke? were just tossed to the side.

As for tracking the resistance - I thought it would be something like they are tracking Finn, through some chip/implant or something. I always wondered how the FO tracked the resistance to their base at the end of TFA and continued tracking them in TLJ and through hyperspace - Finn being that answer would have or could have been an interesting story development. The resistance compassion for forgiveness of others - even persons once serving as FO Storm Troopers, being their downfall would have been an interesting plan by Hux and Snoke. Seemingly this was wasted on the "new tech" story arc - which was boring.

Why are the resistance suddenly renamed Rebels? When I first read the tiotle scrawl, I thought it was a typo, lol

    @DatBoi

This is why I think I like TLJ (what you said about taking risks and expanding what we know about the force).

Coming out of the theater, my friend was saying that this film destroys the established rules of the Star Wars universe and if you don't stick to those rules you end up with more and more over-the-top force abilities and next thing you know one man is draining the life force out of an entire planet. I've realized that I'm okay with my fantasy story about space wizards and laser swords going a little over the top. The prequels took it too far in the opposite direction, quantifying it with a midichlorian count and reducing the force to microscopic organisms.

I still thought plenty of the movie was terrible and needed to be cut but I appreciate that at least it took risks.

I'm ok with the force doing whatever it does - no matter how powerful it is on screen.

Frankly I was expecting crazy stuff in the PT - especially from Anakin, being the chosen one, but would explain his limits being in the Vader suit for the OT.

Vader said "the ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the force" - that always resonated in my mind and we still haven't seen the force do anything along the lines of the bold statement.

Darth Nihilus was able to drain the life from entire planets and before he became non-cannon, people were okay with that.
  • I think it was a bad idea to have different directors write their own movies. I want to know what J.J. Abrams would have done with Snoke and Rey's parents.
  • Kylo Ren as,
He killed Snoke and became the Supreme Leader, and took COMMAND of the First Order
    1...2...3! You're dead!

I think Han Solo's movie next year is gonna be a **** show - different directors for the same movie, due to walk outs/firing.

I think a Han Solo movie was a bad idea anyways.

Ya true - interesting to see what direction JJ would have taken TLJ, but if we can go by the force awakens, it likely would have mirrored TESB completely. What we got was a close comparison to TESB anyways.

Rian Johnson wasted a lot of good oportunities,
    l wanted to see:

The Knights of Ren (in combat against Luke and Rey)
    Snoke's origin
    An explanation about Rey's powers
    A Heroic Luke
    The True power of Luke
    The True Power of Snoke
    Kylo & Rey vs Snoke
    Luke vs Snoke
    Anakin's Force Ghost
A good ending to General Leia
    More screentime to Phasma
Luke wielding his green lightsaber (in the actual story, not in a flashback)
More screentime to R2, 3PO and Chewie
I wanted to see Lando or Wedge

You saw the knights of ren they got killed by rey and kylo

Those were not the Knights of Ren - they were Snoke's elite praetorian guards.

I think the Knights of Ren will be in the next movie for sure.

I was very disappointed by Snoke's lack of backstory and Luke's seemingly pointless death.

I also was puzzled why he showed up at the end with Anakin'Rey's blue lightsaber and not s[porting his green saber - I felt something was off with that, before they revealed he was just a force vision/projection.

I was disappointed we did not see Luke's true power and thought he was going to appear in Snoke's thrown room, similar to Yoda in AOTC, but glad he did not.

If he showed up at the end and took out all the ATATs with a wave of his hand, then that would have been spectacular!

This isn't really a spoiler. But I guess I understand why some people might think it is. Better safe than sorry I suppose.

That being said, they should just name them "Kylo Ren (Episode VII)" and "Kylo Ren (Episode VIII)"

The Last Jedi was great...except for the story. And that's unfortunately the important bit for a Star Wars movie.
Oh my god, how could someone who knew Star Wars write that?! They kept serving up great potential only to fall flat on their faces. Every interesting story arc established in TFA and earlier films, as well as in TLJ itself, was allowed to just fizzle out. They established Snoke as a great Supreme Leader...the way he manipulated Rey and Kylo to get the confrontation was brilliant, and the way he taunted Rey once there was perfect. And then...dead. Talk about not capitalizing! Though even with his death it setup the interesting possibility of a Rey/Kylo alliance. But no, once again it simply devolves into the same old story.
    Luke/Rey training sessions...nope, not really. Snoke/Kylo training sessions...nope.
80% of the movie revolves around a space chase that is so illogical, it astounds me. In addition, they might as well not have had Finn or Rose in this movie at all. BB8 was treated the same way as C3PO was in the prequels. Where JJ Abrams went light on CGI, Rian Johnston went all out, especially on the casino world.
Mary Poppins Leia almost made me cry out in exasperation.
Now, that's not to say there weren't cool moments. The opening 15 minutes were great. The Rey/Kylo lightsaber battle was pretty good. Rey in the DS cave was a cool scene, though one with little payoff. The sacrificial lightspeed run through the fleet was also cool, but it does make me wonder why they don't use lightspeed missiles if lightspeed is so destructive. I really liked the Luke projection thing, because it was a brilliant thing for him to do in that situation.
But all in all, highly disappointing, to the point of being disastrous in my eyes. I'm not sure how the trilogy can be redeemed now. And I definitely don't know why critics are lauding this movie. It would have gotten a 7/10 from me as an entertaining movie, but as a Star Wars movie and with where they took the story? 4/10

What do you think about Luke's death?

This will be the major talking point long term. Should then have done it? Why did he die? Why not wait till IX? Will he come back as a force ghost?

I liked how they did it overall because it gives a strong impression that Luke almost wanted to die in order to give him self to the force.

I assume what actually caused him to die/ evaporate into the force was that seprateing himself from his body on the island must have took so much energy/lifeforce that it killed him.

This is the topic of a major thread once we are allowed to post outside of this.

I have post many times above that I hated Luke's death - I did. It was "rushed" into this movie.

I like the twist that he was actually a force projection and not really in battle. Why he was wielding a broken Anakin/Rey lightsaber and not his green blade is beyond me though. - especially as Kylo should have recognized the weapon and known it to have already been destroyed.

Why he could not have lived passed this movie is a question to a simple enough answer that Johnson I do not believe understands either.

If he returns as a force ghost in Ep 9 (to possibly train or guide Rey further) then why does he have to return as a ghost - why not let him die similar to yoda, in the way he did in TLJ, but in Ep 9 instead?

I like the fact he went to that island to die and he did. He died looking peacefully into the twin suns - reminiscent of Tatooine - that was all great, but how he died and why remain a mystery.

Aaaaaaand this is why I saw the movie on opening night.
Kylo slamming his mask into a wall was shown in the trailer but that doesn't tell the whole story, as per usual with trailers. The fact that he completely destroyed it and doesn't wear it for the rest of the film is significant and I consider that a spoiler. Hell, I wouldn't even tell my friend whether or not I liked the film because he knows my opinions of other SW films and the fact that I liked it or hated it could somewhat spoil it for him.

I haven't watched the movie, but I make a decision that will not watch it. I read many spoilers and review and I think that I don't want to see these Luke and Lea (a.k.a. Mary Poppins). The only "good" thing about this movie is that make my intention to stop playing this game much easier - I just don't want any toons from this movie - Flying Lea, Luke Assassin or Mighty Nobody Snoke.

i hated the film but i say just see it only because reviews make certain plots way more what they are. for example the comedy. people blew it way out of context becaus ei thought it wa son thor 3 level with al the rants. it wasnt i hate the film becaus eit simply dosent answer anything from ep7 nor doe sit even focus on rey's jedi journey at all. i said this before it felt more of a rebellion 2.0 anthology film than a episodic skywalker story

Disney and Lucasfilm said they wanted to kill Luke and force the story to focus on Rey, Poe, and Finn. They were right. The legend of Luke would always overshadow the new characters as long as he was a part of the film. Killing his character puts him squarely in the back seat. Keep in mind, he's a force ghost now, not gone from the saga. I agree with why they did it, just not how they did it. Hey, watch how powerful Luke is. He's indestructible. Tricked you, jedi mind trick, which is even more impressive. Oh, wait... He's dead.
It wasn't obvious enough that the effort drained him to the point of death.

I always loved that quote too, but I interpretted it differently. I think what Vader was getting at was that you may have a technological terror that can destroy planets but a proper application of the force can bring the whole thing crumbling down. I don't think Vader meant that destroying a planet is small-time compared to the force, which you can use TO DESTROY GALAXIES!!!!! but rather that the Force can undue all the best laid plans of men.

As for Nihilus, yeah bring it on. I'm definitely down to see some crazy force stuff. TLJ had tons of "new" force powers and I think that's great. Let's expand this universe a bit- the force doesn't have to be just for reflecting blaster bolts, lifting rocks and shooting lightning out of your hands.

  • Smoke and his huge ship would be awesome
  • Rose, Snoke's guards, Husk, "Angel Leia", "Mutiny Poe"

The last 2 were a joke
  • BB-9E
    Hux
    Rose
  • Force vision Luke would be amazing.
Change kylos name to supreme leader ren. Snokes body guards, Wouldn’t mind even having 2/3 different variations in this game.
I really don’t want general hugs; I never liked him in TFA or TLJ.
And hopefully we can get Snoke.. He will come in 3 parts. Rofl
