I'm honestly surprised there isn't one of these threads already--and if there is one I'm not going to practice necromancy on it--so let's go ahead and start one now. Music means a lot of different things to different people; whether you're the kind to obsess over every minutiae of artist, album, genre, year released, etc; the insufferable, pretentious hipster whose taste in music leaves others scratching their head; the person who could care less and just wants to dance; the person who finds music healing; or the person who uses music as inspiration or motivation... Let's set aside our differences and share what we're into (and have civil discussions about it if possible).
As a general guideline--until one of the moderators chimes in with what is and isn't okay for this thread--if your song uses a lot of strong language, or the lyrics/video touches on subjects and/or themes that may not be appropriate for all audiences, add a warning and/or hide it under a spoiler tag.
Also, if you really want people to listen to what you're posting, ensure your link will properly embed!
I'll start with Vienna Teng's My Medea:

I’m also a fan of movie scores/soundtracks. The best ones are designed to draw out very specific emotional responses to complement the story at hand, but also function on their own. I’m a big fan of the obvious ones (Williams, Zimmer, Shore), but I also like Jonny Greenwood, Alexandre Desplat, and the OSTs for The Witch, Avatar the Last Airbender, and It Follows.
When it comes to bands, I’m kind of a normie. I like The Doors, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, etc.
That was great. Also, new rule, all girls should wear earrings like that. I'm deeply offended you didn't dig up my old music topic, but instead thought for yourself and did your own thing. I like a well crafted AMV and the Gorillaz too.

Well, when it ended up being just me posting, it ceased to perform it's intended purpose of me finding new music. I just incorporated stuff into my W & P thread. This thread will work just fine. Natalie Merchant is one of my favorite female musicians. Warning, she cusses at the very end when she feels like she messes up. To my ears it sounded exactly like the finished song.

I've found Pandora is pretty effective at introducing me to new music, though it has its limits, and lacks artists you may find through other sources. For example, Pandora introduced me to these guys--and their music is weirdly interesting and often creepy--but their most popular videos on Youtube have maybe 20,000 videos, and when looking for a song to show you I found several with under 50 views (this one's right at 100):
Here's Unto Ashes' I Remember Happiness:

And, though I would like to limit this to one song/post, have an artist I first found through Youtube but couldn't get through Pandora until several months later, and whose channel is still spotty and sparse (and it's an amusing contrast because this video has 11 million views at the moment):
Justin Cross' Drink the Water:
(Warning: video/lyrics touches on religious themes that some viewers may find offensive, and the video has lots of cartoon violence)

Yeah, I prefer to pick actual people's brains. Digital services go too narrow and targeted and I like a really weird range of music.

I told myself I'd respond to this one when I got a chance, so I'm sorry that took me so long.
There's some really beautiful scores/soundtracks, but one of my biggest pet peeves is when you get down to the track itself, the meat of the song was in the movie, and it immediately changes to something from another part of the movie completely different from emotional tone and sound of what you'd been looking for... You're right, they're the best when they can function on their own and stand as a song--and a work of art--in and of itself. I get a decent amount of classical through my Pandora, too, but I'm really bad about keeping track of the composer (I just get way too much Chopin).
There's some modern classical groups you might be interested in, such as Two Steps from Hell (this is their song Victory):

I thought I knew what I was getting into when I saw the artist was Linkin Park, but I was pleasantly surprised; that's one of their good ones.
Shall I keep posting weird, obscure things then? How about a metal band that doesn't use guitars?
Cantata Sangui's For the Forgotten One:

Yeah, I try not to read the artist or description til afterwards. I didn't in this case and would've never guessed it was Linkin Park (who I like ok). Someone chose the song and I like to see what they liked about it and why.

Intro alone is worth watching.
Pretty comfy, even if it reminded me of the unfortunate time I got tickets to that Video Games Live concert but then they cancelled the show so I missed out (sadface tbh). In the event you don't speak viking, Youtube's CC provides translation; don't be like me and sit there for the first two minutes wondering what the Danes are doing to Vader.
Something by one of my top-three bands:

I had to stop listening to this kind of stuff so much because of spinal damage, but I always liked this one

Ayreon is less of a band and more of a project; the guy behind it--Dutch songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist musician and record producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen; as Wikipedia aptly puts it--writes these great space metal operas and hooks up with other artists to make it into this great production. They--the songs and the project--make the most sense when you can listen to an entire album at once, but some of the songs are okay on their own. Have a taste:

And a full album--one of the only I could find in one video; most of the others are playlists--if that whet your appetite:

Note: this is a metallic song and has a lot of yelling through the song. (There is no language)
