Am I missing something with the first order tie fighters special?
Strafe hits for physical damage. If the enemy had target lock strafes cooldown is reset.
But the basic does physical damage with a chance of a second attack.
Is this just an error in the kit and strafe should be ignored every time?

Strafe deals BIG damage but the bonus of a target locked enemy is that you get to do that damage again next time.
The basic has a chance of a 'double tap' which is great but this doesn't deal anywhere near the same damage. More importantly the basic is needed to apply target lock. The other advantage of this is whenever a target locked enemy is damaged, FOTF gains 15% TM so between the speed boosts and being able to spam the special, it makes FOTF quite a formidable ship.
Basically, if target has target lock, use Strafe. If not, use basic, unless you NEED them to die right then and there.
And if you check swgoh.gg for FO TIE's mechanics, Basic does 160% of Phy Damage at lv1 while Strafe does 248.3% which is 1.55 times as much as Basic.
The fact that it's a special ability and not a basic ability should make that clear.
Descriptions are never indicative of how much damage is dealt. Strafe does more because it's a special and that's how it was programmed.
Not really, many specials don’t do damage at all
I can't wait to have enough ship diversity and synergy in the game to when:
We're not mixing dark-side with Biggs constantly for his tankiness and taunt.
Or HT with light side
