Why do we let people who don’t know what they’re talking about post on the internet? I found this article to be insensitive, and his “I’m not a professional” statement doesn’t make up for it.

  • Wow... that review is a travesty. The author thinks Last Jedi is the best Star Wars film and also that Harry Potter is a better movie series. 'Nuff said.

Honestly it makes sense. He says hes not a fan of sci fi. This would be similar to my wifes review of the movies if she were given the opportunity to write something at this level. It seems he came into it with a mindset and found the things that reinforced that mindset and went with it. (Probably a side effect of not being a movie critic)

Like Kyno said, I felt like his disinterest in Sci Fi soured his view of the movies as a whole, plus the fact that he had had these movies (which are not in fact cinematic masterpieces) hyped up for nearly 4 decades. However, there are many valid points in there, mostly rooted in the idea that these movies are not "great movies" in a critical sense, and there are flaws in all of the trilogies.

  • TLJ had good ideas. Poor writing. If RJ had stuck to directing and found a worthy writer, it could have been a really good movie. RJ has said he doesn't like writing, he's not very good at it, and it takes him a long time. Go with your strengths. This mindset comes with experience, trial and error. I went into watching TLJ wanting to hate it. It took a few viewings, then I started to see what they had in mind. To date, my favorite SW movie, since ROTJ, was Rogue One. It was gritty, no happy ending, in short it relayed the feeling of war.

My two cents, your mileage may vary.

Yeah well, I do not expect modern audiences to appreciate the OG Star Wars series. It was a different time and Star Wars was a ground-breaking film.

Looking back and watching it now, it really does not have great dialogue, some of the pacing is a bit off, and the good guy vs. bad guy setup is rather heavy-handed ... but again, that is what was generally expected in films of that era, or maybe it was just me. For the youth target audience that would be the ones wanting the toys, it was a rip-roaring swashbuckling space fantasy complete with saving the princess from the clutches of the evil one. And the laser blasters and swords were pretty awesome.

To me, there was almost no down time; the only chance there was to breathe really was on Tattoine, and even while on that desolate planet there were conflicts with Jawas, Tuskens, Stormtroopers, Aqualish, Greedo, and more Stormtroopers! Even during the slow bit at Old Ben's home, we were learning for the first time about the mystical Force. Coming on the heels of the 1960's with free love, flower children and growing movement of general spirituality, the Force was an interesting idea and engaging for the audience, so even this slow moment was exciting.

I can see how edgelord writers like this guy would not like the film. After all, it is cool to hate things that others like. Obi-Wan does not react to Luke correctly and he does not recognize these droids ... yeah no kidding, that part of the plot had not been conceived at the time of the OT, and Lucas ignored that the plots would not mesh well when he wrote the PT. But I do not expect this writer to let such egregious oversights slide, it is one of the main reasons why the PT got such bad marks from the OT generation, and it is fantastic fuel for the author's condescending review.

I also like the Harry Potter series. In fact, I am just about done re-reading The Sorcerer's Stone again, it's a fun story.

I love people arguing over opinions
Why wasn't Cobb Vanth shards a reward for the Krayt Dragon raid? Why wasn't Endor Gear Luke shards a reward for the Speeder Bike raid?

Apparently every forum is more interesting than whatever subject the forum is about then, since people argue on every forum.

This is isn’t a TLJ thread (at TVF lolz), it’s just an opinion thread. I just think that his article makes it seem like Star Wars fan are juvenile, and I don’t like that. They aren’t fantastic movies. They are fun sci-fi space operas. But I don’t think this guy has the right idea when he says that “Star Wars was made for children and immature adults.” I connect to Star Wars on a deeper level than “woo yay”, and I know that others do as well.
