It's been a while since I posted a music related thread. To be honest it's been a while since I posted any kind of thread beyond the odd question or two. I wasn't prepared to see Eddie pass, we get wrapped up in our own lives. Below are some links to a great interview with Eddie and his son Wolfgang's new tribute to his late father.

We all have our guitar heroes, and opinions, lets keep them respectful. Eddie left a mark on music evolution. Many of the greats spoke openly about him. About their respect for his abilities. He was mortal but IMHO his contributions, will outlive us all.

  • The guitar GOAT IMHO...at least in the top 3. I, too, was not ready to see his passing, too much music yet to make. I’ve been watching a ton of live EVH vids recently, and it is truly amazing just how clean his sound is, regardless if it was pumped through a sound board first or just captured on a spectators cell phone.

Indeed. The "brown sound" using a variac, etc.. To me the genius of Eddie was his persuit of new and innovating ways to achieve a desired sound he sought. Satriani said it best " We can all play Eruption, we can play it in any chord, but I still stop and get quiet when I hear it played by Eddie". Steve said "only an **** tries to compete with Eddie, it can't be done". Jack White said he used a Floyd Rose inspired by EVH that Eddie helped him have created as a way of marking their friendship on SNL rather than play a VH song.

To me, Eddie was in a class of his own. I put him on the same level as Jeff Beck.

I just cut and paste the link, maybe there is a limit to the number of vids we can display?

When Eddie passed, I was on discord talking to a couple friends. I recived a phone call, from a dear friend with a tone of voice that caused me to take off my headset, and ask what happened. She knew I was a fan, and told me. I went to google, hoping, praying it was a hoax. Nope. Not a hoax. I got back to my friends on discord and said sorry for my slow return to the chat, they asked me what happened (my tone was noticebly different). I mustered my best smart alec remark, and said prepare to say "Oh sh.. No way" I replied " Eddie Van Halen died today. ". My friend of 30 plus years (I'm 62 btw) yelled "WHAT!!!???" "No way, hoax etc..". He is my goto for music history. We all got quiet, not ashamed to say, I cried.

Jeff Beck (The guitar heroes guitar hero) had this to say about Van Halen and EVH in 2013: https://www.vhnd.com/2013/09/26/jeff-beck-praises-eddie-van-halen/

Rick Beato did a video about the "Brown Sound" of EVH https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=juA98y_nMv0
  • Thanks TVF for fixing the link!

Agree dunesea, there have been too many larger than life personalities and talents lost the past couple years (eg Tom Petty, Kenny Rogers, Little Richard, Neil Pert, etc), but Eddie hit me the hardest, as he was the main reason I started to play (and fell in love with) the guitar back in the 80’s.

On a somewhat lighter note, I will put on music when cooking most nights, and after Eddie passed, I pretty much played VH every night for about a month. That is, until my wife finally said, “PLEASE, NO MORE &#$*@ Van Halen!!!” Lol
  • I don't feel tardy..
Make Bronzium autoplay opening an option.

I feel like we missed hearing his best, he had tracks recorded and played for friends but he felt they didn't fit Van Halens style. Maybe Wolf will release them. It would have been Interesting for sure. Gene Simmons said at one point Eddie talked to him about joining KISS. Can you imagine the music they could have created?
