The problem is the battles happen client side and not server side - as in you can in fact go into a battle, go into airplane mode, and then pop the internet back on at the end of the battle.
Fix that little issue, use the "locked" server side characters and mods, and all battles happen server side.
only issue will be peeps losing connection, and generating a lose. I'll take that risk if it can get rid of the issue
