Ability to turn off Guild Chat for younger players PLEASE :)

Prev1
My daughter plays the game specifically cause I love Star Wars and she wants to play with me. I think its good for her because its a fun way to learn Math and share some entertainment together. She is 7. With the release of guilds, I would LOVE to have her join but Guild Chat is not something I can take a chance exposing her to. Can we turn off guild chat for a Guildie as a GM? Or can I turn it off on her game as a control? If that was the case then she could be a great member of our little group and she could raid with us.

When you create your account you are prompted to enter your age. If the age of said person is less than 18 then they would not be able to participate in the chat.
If you created the account for her, which I assume you did there is no current way to turn it off sadly. Perhaps looking for a mature guild would be the best option until you have the ability to disable it.

  • It's got a pretty strict language filter on it. Cumulative becomes partially starred out, for example. But, I can understand that particular bad words might not be the main concern.
  • To add to this, In order to save her account to the cloud so if something happened to her Kindle, I could restore it, I had to start her off as over 21. So the original Child safety is great but it stops me from allowing her to back up her game. I would change her back below 21 if I could also sync her game with the cloud.
  • So basically its back up the account and have guild chat access or roll the dice that the Kindle doesn't get broken (Shes had 3 in about 3 years) and not give her guild chat access.

    Good luck.
My name is cosmicturtle333, aka CT-333, aka Threes.
  • If she's 7 and just playing because it's star wars and has no severe investment of the true gaming aspect, why let her join a guild? I mean just observing some of the names (that made me ROFL) like "Fifty Shades of Rey" and "It burns when I PVP" is probably cause enough to take that portion of the game away from her.

Our game is COPPA Compliant (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act).

As part of that compliance, accounts which are set up as minors will not have access to Guild chat.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks.

Make a guild of just you two? Or don't participate in guilds at all? If she's just 7, I doubt she's jumping at the chance to do tier 7 raids.
  • Man no one even talks in my guild anyways i have like 20 people in it and they all seem like zombies even though theyre level 70's lol. I think maybe they havent found that extremely small icon in their BOTTOM LEFT corner

I'm pretty sure a 7yr old would have more issues finding it. I mean cmon technically they are sending a seven year old to slaughter potential ewoks, hordes of poor rebel/empire soldiers and don't even start with the bug extermination going on in geonosis, droids don't have emotions it's ok to slaughter them just not mine ;)

I personally don't care to use a chat function. That said, I clicked on it in my "knee-**** reaction, join the first one i was invited to" guild, and the first post was "Hello". The next 20 were in German or Dutch or something. Fine with me. I'm not playing video games to be social anyway. Maybe find a guild like that?

Hadn't thought of that. However she is innocent and won't put together most of the "colorful" guild names.

It does help, however you didn't read what I posted. I either have the ability to back up her account and deal with guild chat OR I run the risk of her losing everything because she has a local install and deny her. It's a slippery slope, but being a Systems Admin myself (and knowing how hard she is on tech) I want her account backed up. So yes you have given the ability to set this, however you have not considered that kids are just little people and she would be upset if she lost her progress. (She was telling everyone at my birthday the other day I got Darth Sidius!! over and over. It was a trip.)

She's not. But it's not about raids for her. Its about playing with me and being a member of the team. Thats what Guilds are. A team

While I agree the game is violent to a point, there is no gore or blood because of the way they created it. All the toons are just images on the "holotables". Its quite brilliant actually and a great use of SW lore...(the famous holotable game between Chewie and R2).

It burns when I PVP, hahahahaha. I want to congratulate the genius who came up with that! If he isn't a gay fish, that is.

As a previous poster suggested, why not set up an invite-only guild of just one (her)?

Then set up a new alternate account for yourself (I assume this is okay, I haven't checked TOS). And if there's anyone else you know in real life you trust, and check periodically to make sure no additional people have been allowed in by her. At least with the up to 600 energy/day, and maybe some of the challenges she can reach tier one on even solo, let alone with a few others helping it will eventually be possible to do a raid (since there's no time limit below heroic, and 5 attempts per day, it will take time, but eventually...?).

So on the one hand we have censorship. On the other hand we have uncomfortable consequences. You can't have it both ways. As a parent its YOUR job to filter, not the game, not other people, not situations, not TV.. YOU. If you are afraid of teaching your daughter about life, its not going to get any easier, and you need to LEARN. Life is about TEACHING not AVOIDING. Apparently no one taught you this as a child.

I have a 6 year old, we watch R rated movies when she isn't in the room, but sometimes she catches a bad word or two, so what? She KNOWS the bad words, she KNOWS what is acceptable behavior and what isn't. Bad words are ONLY bad because YOU allow them to be.

People use euphemisms and this is where I go off the deep end. fudge, darn, shoot, crud, dangit, freakin.. Seriously.. What's the difference? The MEANING is still the same you are SAYING a bad word, replacing it with a less used interjection does NOT change the fact or it's meaning.

LEARN to teach your daughter about life instead of finding ways to filter her from reality and some day she will appreciate the difference, even when you will not. The world shouldn't change because of a few exceptions.

    You have 2 choices.

Suck it up. Deal with it as it comes.

    OR

Don't let her play the game, which is a VERY unrealistic approach you can't protect her or shelter her WHOLE life, eventually she will have to learn on her own. So by filtering you are not giving her a chance to grow up.

Sad reality but that's LIFE, learning it now or when she is 27.. what good is that going to do, except that in the MEAN time she will figure out how to manage it before its too late.
  • I think it's reasonable to not allow your seven year old to talk to strangers online. Although, this game might be a good forum to teach online communication (don't give out your name, personal info, etc etc) because it's not private. There are 48 other people on the chat line, so probably even if you did get one creep, the others would try to shut that down.

Obviously it's up to you as a parent :). Good luck with whatever you decide.

Good point, i also believe it was intentional just to focus on farming instead of commucating. Lord's Mobile has a transparent chat on the top center, so you read it, click on it to expand. Its very useful for a open pvp game.
