Hickory, meta is the overall summation of the game as a whole. For example, because right now dodge based characters and characters like Rey and Royal Guard are so prevalent in most people's teams that it is consider quintessential to the game itself.
At least that is how i understand meta. As the game shifts in design and formula, so to does the meta shift.
PvP player vs player
PvE player vs Environment e.g. light/dark battles against the computer
Dps damage per shot (sometimes second) usually a reference to a high damage attacker.
AoE Area of effect i.e. area damage to opposing team.
These took me a while to figure out. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Because I'm one of "those guys", these are abbreviations, not acronyms. F.U.B.A.R. or S.N.A.F.U. are acronyms.
The word "Meta" is best described in a dictionary, and only on a game forum will you see if being used the way everyone here uses it. ZenArkor described it accurately.

META means Most Effective Tactic Available. And it applies to most games that provide variety to the multiplayer.

Don't believe everything you hear in YouTube videos. Meta is not an acronym.

The actual definition may mean change, but gamers have been using it as an acronym for "most effective tactics available for years now". Think I first heard it around 2010.
Meta is a word that refers to the philosophical level above the subject itself. The "metagame" is pretty much "the game of playing the game." It's a collection of strategies that are accepted as strong ways of playing the game.
And how about the terms used to describe play, and for guild recruitment?
Toon?
Dolphin?
Whale?
Toon - any character
Guppie- Small fish, $10 here and there most likely under $100
Dolphin - Medium fish, spends a little bit here and there. I'd guess a couple hundred.

Ai artificial intelligence
Buff any positive status effect
Debuff any negative status effect
Debuff also used to denote an action that removes a buff
O⬆ or Oup, of offup is offense up
Oprah usually referring to the rancor
Kardashian guards usually referring to pig like gamorreian gaurds.
