Why so many bottomless (very deep) pits?

I was just watching a Lego Star Wars episode and Luke and others were falling down a very deep pit. Why are there such deep pit everywhere in the Star Wars universe? Even on ships? Who builds a starship with a big hole in it?

    They copied the game which is designed to block you into an area.

    It like saying "why are there so many massive walls" if they used that method instead.

    Haha! e.g. The one the emperor is tossed in to in Jedi...The one Han falls into in TFA...The sarlacc...even the one Luke falls into in Empire...hahaha..why?? Why so many? Hella amusing observation.
