Everyone, for years and years. It’s very unlikely you will get your problem resolved by the bots in the help chat. You’re honestly better off asking people here, someone has probably already gone through it and can at least give you ideas to try.
There are times where the chat box does disappear. I don’t really know why this happens, but I’ve closed and re-opened the game and that has always solved the issue.
It’s a fair annoyance to complain about, but the solution is awfully simple…
Maybe the people you are trying to DM don’t have their chat turned on, maybe they don’t want to chat, or maybe there’s actually an issue.
If you are using Discord, try asking one of your officers if they are receiving chat invites from you
….but that doesn’t answer your original question. If the in game Help button isn’t working, try reporting as a bug in the proper section of this forum
Bug Reporting was removed from this forum and shunted to the general EA forum, which is next to impossible to navigate, also probably next to where the CG Playtesting occurs.
My direct chat in the game is not working so I was trying to get that fixed.
FWIW, I and several others in my guild having the same issue. We are coordinating in Discord and people cannot receive Direct Messages I send, nor are ones they send out being received. It's not a chat setting.

Can confirm this is also happening in our guild. Leader and I sent each other in game DMs and there is no sign of the other person’s message at all.

OP & others posting similar threads - For info, you can see the progress (in the loosest definition of the term) against this bug (& the related issue of Guild Officer instructions) on the CG Trello board: https://trello.com/b/vgQhKHMf/swgoh-developer-tracker

Have you checked your chat settings?
