physical damage vs. special damage

I notice that a lot of toons in this game has much higher special damage than physical damage yet their special abilities "deal physical damage" or deal no damage at all. Is this kinda joke or special damage does help the special abilities no matter what?

I'd be interested in how this works for someone like Lobot whose special is a dispel/heal and there's no "damage" involved.

This makes more sense to me, just thinking about Aayla, whose special ability deals physical damage while her special damage is over 4k
