What in the world is salvage?

For example right now I'm collecting MK 3 Sienar Holo projectors (who isn't) but when I buy one of those from Shipments that's says "MK 3 Sienar Holo projectors salvage" it doesn't add to my total collected. So what's the point of salvage material?

For that particular piece of gear, you need 20. Later on it goes upwards of 50 for bigger pieces.

Go to whichever charcter needs them. And craft it. How have you not done this before heheh.
