What’s Ahead?

I took his sacrifice as being driven by pure hate and, ultimately, would have been in vain. He would have melted before he could damage the canon and they would have one less fighter for the resistance. His anger blinded him to the truth of it. Rose saving him was a way of showing that only love will lead to victory, never hate.

I like this read of it. More or less how I felt watching it.

I would have tolerated Rose interrupting Finn’s sacrifice if she had said something like, “I lost my sister, and I couldn’t bear to lose you as well.”

Instead she gives this horrible lecture about how she saved him—he didn’t need saving, he was making a selfless sacrifice for his friends. Instead of running away, he was finally committing to the Resistance and doing something incredibly selfless to help the people and cause that he had come to care about.

Rose comes along out of nowhere and interrupts that, and then has the nerve to lecture him about how you are supposed to fight for the ones you love. That’s exactly what he was doing, stu pid Rose!

Exactly but that's what I'm saying Finn has had the progression and has grown up enough to make that choice. Rose hasn't.

I will agree with you though her ending rant was dumb.

What if the big Marquee event is Holdo and the Raddus? You unlock her and the ship 7* but at the end of Tier 7 event she lightspeeds into the Supremacy and are stuck with an 2* escape shuttle and some minor 3* pilot? Or worse. A starspeeder 3000 with Capt Rex.

It seemed the theme of the movie. Characters well known to be filled with hope, losing it for seemingly petty reasons, and having it returned by a “mary sue”.

Eh I disagree with the whole mary sue thing for the most part as well. The first movie she was definitely portrayed that way but episode 8 really gave her some redemption in my eyes. She's trying extremely hard to do the right thing and for the most part succeeds. And even though the force is supposed to be "balanced" she is nowhere near as powerful as snoke who can just toy with people using the force.

Don't get me wrong nobody likes the casino planet arc and there were definitely some things that irked me but overall I think it wasn't a bad movie and I think a lot of the hate is extremely overexaggerated and unwarranted. But that's just my opinion.

Yeah, there is definitely something deeper to Rey we haven’t seen yet and I feel she’s as much a “mary sue” as Luke and Anakin were to their trilogies. Since she is the same character as both Anakin and Luke, it follows that she is the Skywalker of the new series and therefore must be Han and Leia’s daughter and Ben’s sister. I digress.

If you want a real “mary sue” look no further than Rose.

Perhaps it’s the real reason behind the everybody else’s hate for Rose, I don’t know but, it is the reason behind mine.

Finn was going to destroy the canon and Rose stopped him.
    She's a mole for FO. ;)

Finn was going to die pointlessly, doing nothing to stop the cannon. And Rose saved him to fight another day.

Star Wars episode 9 will find the entire Resistance trapped on an island controlled by a computer and only Mary Sue can save them. Special guest stars will be every one of JJ’s friends and family and every cast member from previous JJ series and shows. Darth JarJar will be revealed to be Snoke and Ewoks will help destroy the Death Star 3.

She saved him? How did she know flying into him wouldn't kill them both? Sounds like a kamakazi FO agent to me. And how did they escape the walkers they were right next to and make it to the base? Unless the FO didn't want to "out" or kill their spy :)

She gave a weird speech about not being the hero by doing something wreckless, just after she played the hero by doing something wreckless just to cover herself since she wasn't able to take out Finn and needed to keep his trust so she went for the kiss.

Speaking as someone who works at Star Tours, I am HIGHLY offended! He did more than his fair share to help! It's not his fault it was his first flight.

I didn't mind the casino planet arc. I felt it had an important message. Rose and Finn come up with a crazy idea (the first order is able to track them through lightspeed but for some reason they only do it from one ship. What sense does that make? Only a pretty stupid military commander wouldn't have backups in case of malfunction, sabotage, or whatever). Then they sneak off, get arrested, and decide to trust some random guy. That they met in a prison cell. They make it on to the enemy ship but get caught because the enemy wasn't a bunch of ****. As a result, the First Order corrects and oversight (not monitoring for smaller ships) and is able to massacre a large part of the resistance.
In other words, Finn, "we'll use the force" proves that even if the force is on your side, stupidity will not win the day.
Also, I thought Finns suicide run at the cannon was at least partially out of guilt for all the deaths he caused with his **** and shortsighted plan.

    Ridiculous censorship by the way.

The silly thing is, all small Resistance ships have hyperdrive on them. There was no reason the stunt fighters and shuttles could not escape to hyperspace drop their passengers and return to evacuate the rest of the crew.

For this story arc, they conveniently left that out to add bologna tension/drama and a sense of impending doom. And pretty sure parking on a beach is not a jailable crime of the century on this planet.

Not sure why resistance didn't split the fleet into three separate hyperspace jumps and 2/3 of resistance escapes.
  • Options
Exactly—if Finn and Rose were able to escape, then others could have done the same. You would have ended up with several ships worth of Resistance survivors instead of just a handful on the Falcon.

The problem with the casino arc and pretty much Finn's entire storyline is that it relied far too much on coincidences and ex machina to get from scene to scene and in the end wound up being pretty pointless to the success or failure of the Resistance.
