I don't want to get too crazy gearing them because i'm trying to prepare for CLS https://swgoh.gg/u/wickedwick/squads/81458/ although I'm not sure I'll be able to get all the abilities maxed out.
I'm aware I'll be needing mods and abilities but anyway want to make sure.

Should be adequate with decent mods. But no investment in your capital ship commander or pilots is too much.
