They politely made an excuse to rid of it to get sales up for the more lucrative/speedier crystal packs. Its been working so you'll never get that bargain 100 crystals per day for 3 weeks for like what was it? $4.99 usd?

It's called "handling". A business offers you a token gesture to reduce the immediate backlash without having any intention of making good on it but rather just buying time for people to forget.
They spoke about it in an interview and the reason they had to remove it was that it was a "violation" of an agreement with a partner. Probably some clause about "subscriptions". So they need to see if they can find a way to bring it back that doesnt violate that agreement.
