How does borrowing heroes work?

When you have a friend, how does the game choose who you can borrow?
Is it only the portrait that person has, is it anyone from the arena team, or anyone from the roster?

I also want to know how many times you can borrow the same hero.

If I have only one ally, will I always get the option to use that ally?

I think you can borrow the same hero once every 4 hours.

as far as which hero is borrowed from a roster - I have no clue how that works

I've heard it's the 'leader' of your party you last used but that doesnt make sense..
