Worth noting that you'll rarely if ever use a capital ship's basic ability, so it's not super important to max that out. None of my capitals have all their abilities maxed, because I haven't been farming Prestige long enough to do it, but you really only need to max out a couple of abilities on each one to get most of their effectiveness.
For example, Ackbar's ultimate goes from a 70% turn meter boost to 100% when taken from its penultimate rank to maxed. In practice, a 70% TM gain vs 100% are going to have the same result - my entire team gets a turn before the enemy gets to do anything else - most of the time, so I haven't bothered to blow the additional 150 prestige for the final rank.
I would add that there isnt really a "need" to farm. It all comes quickly enough through you normal farming of other other things. One day it becomes like sim tickets.

I'm now at about 3.4 million GP. Have been farming nothing but prestige out of the squad arena store for about 4 months straight now. I have all of Ackbar maxed, Tarkin Mace at maybe 6 or so on the abilities, and I have the 920 or so in the bank to finish the last two levels on my Negotiator.
That means to take Mace and Tarkin to max I need at least another 1800. If I were to farm Malevolence I would need another 1900. This doesn't include Thrawn's who I don't have for yet another 1900. CG has also said they are releasing at least 2 more capital ships very soon, so there's another 3800 needed. That's a total of 9000+ prestige needed to max out the ships for me. Let's cut that in half because I no longer need to finish off Mace and may not need a different one anyway. That's still another 4500+ needed.
I'm sure there comes a time when you get enough prestige through other means but that time is a long ways away for me. So if you're someone who has played for less than 2 years (like me, though I'm coming up on that marker) then yeah, you'll need to farm the stuff for a while to get caught up
