Sustain is important, particularly early on. You need a well-invested squad. The current clone squad fares well against today's assault battle. Chaze is a good core as well, though nowadays it's generally crushed with the Rebel event/raid toons. And given the increases in the gear cap, it's significantly easier to overwhelm the event.
You're not supposed to be able to take every- or even any- phase immediately. But you build toward them over time.

not sure what event you are doing, but your team may not be strong enough.
