The best value is to refresh his node up to 4 times a day and use the 50 energy refreshes. That gets you about 8.3 shards a day (25 attempts at 33%) and takes about 34 days. At 425 crystals a day that is 14,450 crystals.
If you use the store they are 80 crystals per shard or 22,400 crystals to finish him. It is probably quicker but is more expensive.
I am a little surprised that they don't have some kind of packs available for those that saw the kit for PP and want to get there faster. Though I doubt they would be cheaper than the store if you get there quicker. Likely 1350 Crystal's for the 5-330 chance.

Zippers. Buttons are much easier to rip off.
