The ratio is 10:1. For every 10 extra shards you have, you can get 1 new shard in the shop.

1 extra character shard = 15 shard currency
300 shard currency = purchase 2 *new* shards
20 extra character shards = 300 shard currency = purchase 2 *new* shards
or
10 extra character shards = purchase 1 *new* shard
