Help Out a Newbie :)

So at first I started out just going for characters I liked/were strong. But I hear you guys talk about synergy and different types of teams (assist based for example). If someone could explain these to me that would be extremely helpful.

And are these only for PvP battles? Because I find the system very frustrating because I usually win against the strongest 5 opponents I can (even as a noob) but end up dropping to the rank I started at everyday (like 700ish)
