Smiley face avatar images?

Hey just wondering about all the avatar icons I'm seeing around... Been awhile since I have been on the forums.
Are they all from some site or something? Any inside meaning behind them or pop-culture reference I'm missing, or just a fad?

It is the basic avatar that you pick when you first create your account, and you have a bunch of faces to pick from.
