Since the event started it states that his 1 shot ability gives back how much health they had on dead

I had managed to get to the final phase of event for once I wasn't skill blocked and killed the Director at full health, he dies and he's rewarded no health so I lose next turn

does this mean that your protected from his 1 shot (hp wise) if you have shields?

He doesn't heal, he gains that much max health. Pretty much it does:
Current health +killed toon max health =new health
Max health +killed toon max health=new max health
