Stuck on "Checking for updates"

I was doing an arena battle, and the game froze when it completed. Now, when I try to reload it on any device, I get stuck on the "Checking for updates" screen and cannot proceed.

Suggestions?

Edit: I tried uninstalling and reinstalling already.

Log out of Game Centre / Google equivalent, and log back in.
