I cannot select GMY for assists when he is in this back row position. Is it my fat thumbs, or do other players experience this too?

You know, I've got the exact same problem. She only solution I fond was to put him in a different slot.

Yes drove me mad, had to move him in lineup

I experience it in various events, I could of swore I moved him in my initial set up but he kept appearing in that back position.
